DoJ refusal to share Trump’s Mar-a-Lago classified documents suggests investigation

DOJ appears ready to launch a probe into Trump for bringing classified documents to Mar-a-Lago: report

"Former President Donald Trump was caught taking 15 large boxes of documents from the White House to Mar-a-Lago when he left the White House, it was reported in February. The National Archives sent a team to Palm Beach, Florida to collect the truck-load of information it discovered was missing last summer.

What was uncovered, however, is that Trump didn't just take any old documents, many of them were reportedly top-secret and classified information relating to national security.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that the Justice Department appears poised to begin an official probe into the removal of the documents. Sources familiar with the probe spoke about the ongoing investigation, saying that it was in the early stages. It's unknown the degree to which the Justice Department has made its way through the boxes seized at Mar-a-Lago. There are people who may have witnessed the documents being removed or may have been involved in it, but thus far it's unclear whether the DOJ has reached out to any witnesses.

The revelations came from House Oversight chair Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), who alleged on Thursday in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland that the DOJ was blocking her committee from looking into the boxes from Mar-a-Lago. In fact, she used the word "interfering.""

 

New York attorney general wants Trump held in contempt, fined $10,000 per day

"New York's attorney general asked a state judge Thursday to issue an order of contempt against former President Donald Trump, claiming he has failed to comply with a previous ruling requiring him to turn over documents by March 31 as part of an investigation into his company's financial practices.

The office of New York Attorney General Letitia James also requested that Trump be fined $10,000 a day until he complies with the ruling.

Trump and two of his children, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump, were ordered on Feb. 17 to appear for depositions in James' long-running civil fraud probe. They appealed the order to appear, but did not at that time challenge a separate part of that ruling in which Donald Trump was ordered to comply with a subpoena "seeking documents and information."

The judge ordered Trump to comply with the demand for documents and information by March 3, and later extended that deadline to March 31 — a date that was agreed to by both sides at the time, according to a court document. In Thursday's filing, James' office said Trump has not only failed to comply with that order, but in recent days raised objections to it.

James' office said in Thursday's filing that Trump's attorneys later indicated that he would not produce any of the subpoenaed documents "because his counsel (based on search efforts that have not been divulged) could not find any.""

 

Wrong is wrong. So the wrong type of loans from AXOS got the attention of investigators from New York. Now the NY AG want $10,000.00 per day fines for refusing to comply with subpoenas, huh?

Before launching We Build the Wall, Kolfage had made a living by peddling right-wing misinformation on social media, eventually leading to him being banned on Facebook. In a letter filed in the federal Southern District of New York, federal prosecutors said that in addition to the attempt and conspiracy to commit wire fraud charges, Kolfage also agreed to plead guilty to federal charges of lying on his 2019 taxes."

 

Trump has many of his supporters to pardon if he's ever reelected.

"Axos has teamed up with nonbank lenders on loans to small businesses that carried cripplingly high double- and triple-digit effective annual interest rates," reported NBC, citing loan documents. "The bank has also specialized in loans to foreign nationals, internal documents and its website state, and has offered a type of loan that allows borrowers who paid cash for a property to turn around and instantly take money out. Such loans may pose money laundering risks, banking analysts say."

They're also involved in a lawsuit with two former employees who had questions about the way Axos was conducting its lending operations. One of those, Jennifer Brear Brinker, worked in the company's Risk Management and Compliance Department. She alleges that Axos intentionally understaffs the compliance team "in an effort to conceal its failure to comply with federal banking regulations" and contends she was terminated in January 2021 while completing a report highlighting deficiencies at Axos including "significant issues in the bank's anti-money laundering practices."

F.B.I. Preparing to Investigate How Classified Material Went to Trump’s Home

"WASHINGTON — Federal authorities are in the preliminary stages of investigating the handling of classified material found at former President Donald J. Trump’s Florida home after he left office, people familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

The effort, led by the F.B.I., stems from the discovery of classified information in 15 boxes that contained documents, mementos, gifts and letters that had been taken from the White House at the end of Mr. Trump’s term in apparent violation of the requirements for turning over all presidential records to the National Archives.

The development was reported earlier by The Washington Post.

The National Archives said in February that it had consulted with the Justice Department about the classified material, which it retrieved the previous month from Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida. The agency described the materials in question as “classified national security information.”

The Justice Department has instructed the National Archives not to share with the House Oversight Committee, which is conducting its own investigation, details about the material taken from the White House by Mr. Trump, the committee disclosed on Thursday, in a hint that a criminal investigation might be underway.

In cases of this type, the F.B.I. would typically look at an array of scenarios, including whether the classified material was mishandled or inadvertently disclosed, and it could examine whether a foreign adversary might have gotten access.

The investigation could put Mr. Trump at odds with the F.B.I. yet again."

Mitch McConnell's answer on Trump 2024 makes zero sense - CNNPolitics

"On February 13, 2021, Mitch McConnell said this on the floor of the Senate about Donald Trump’s actions on January 6: “Former President Trump’s actions preceding the riot were a disgraceful dereliction of duty.”

And this: “There is no question that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of that day.”

And even this about the rioters: “They did this because they had been fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on Earth – because he was angry he’d lost an election.”

McConnell’s speech was widely regarded as an attempt by the Senate Republican leader to make a clean break from Trump and move the party forward without him. McConnell seemed done with Trump – even though he voted to acquit the former President in the Senate impeachment trial – and he wanted every Republican to know it and follow his lead.

All of which makes what McConnell said less than two weeks later seem, well, odd? McConnell said on Fox at the time that he would “absolutely” support Trump if he wound up as the Republican presidential nominee in 2024.

Asked about that Thursday by Axios’ Jonathan Swan, McConnell said he has “an obligation to support the nominee” of his party. And McConnell said that his two statements on Trump were “not at all inconsistent, I stand by everything I said on January 6 and everything I said on February the 13th.”"

 

Self-Proclaimed Proud Boy from California Enters Guilty Plea, Admits to Unloading Chemical Spray on Police During Jan. 6 Capitol Attack

":A California man who has proclaimed to be a member of the Proud Boys extremist group has pleaded guilty to assaulting police officers during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Ricky Willden, 40, admitted Thursday that while facing off against Capitol police, he unloaded a canister of chemical spray on the officers, and then threw the can at them when he was done.

“In publicly available videos recorded on Jan. 6, Willden can be seen in a crowd near the east door of the Capitol at 2:24 p.m. (according to time stamps in one of the videos) wearing a dark jacket, beanie cap and gloves, and cheering as the doors to the Capitol opened,” a Justice Department statement said. “At 2:35 p.m., he can be seen raising his hand and spraying an unknown substance from a green can toward police officers who were standing guard at the east door.”

Less than an hour later, surveillance footage shows Willden entering the Capitol building through doors on the east side. He then entered the Rotunda, and left the building at around 3:20 p.m."

"PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Alan Swinney, a self-proclaimed “patriot” and a former Proud Boy, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of 11 criminal charges, officials said.

Following a six-day trial in October, Swinney was convicted of 2nd- and 4th-degree assault, 2nd- and 4th-degree attempted assault, two counts of 2nd-degree unlawful use of mace, unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon (paintball gun) and pointing a firearm at another.

The 51-year-old committed the crimes during a two-day span during protests in Portland in August 2020. According to court documents, Swinney moved to Oregon from Texas during 2020 and didn’t have gainful employment or other ties to Portland.

He was arrested by Portland police on September 30, 2020, weeks after an indictment was issued. Swinney was denied his motion for release after his bail was set at $534,000. Swinney pleaded not guilty to all 12 charges against him.

According to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, the prosecution proved Swinney assaulted several people and committed crimes based on his white nationalist beliefs. Swinney spread his beliefs through social media, where he would also threaten politically motivated violence.

Officials said he shot a man’s face with a paintball gun, leading to a serious eye injury, and sprayed bear mace in multiple peoples’ faces. Videos showed Swinney pointing a loaded Ruger .357 magnum at a crowd. No shots were fired.

Swinney was also accused of shooting multiple people with paintballs."
