A disgraced Trump loyalist who could unearth details about Trump's attempted coup is meeting with congressional investigators today

    excerpt:

""The insurrection represented the first failure of a peaceful presidential transition in American history. It would not have been possible without Trump's enablers, and his legal enablers were at the head of the pack. That's why there's been so much attention paid to Clark, including the desire to interview him imminently by the January 6 committee and because Clark was the principal internal advocate of enabling Trump's dangerous assaults on the election outcome," said Norm Eisen, who served as counsel for House Democrats in Trump's first impeachment back in late 2019 and co-signed a letter calling for the District of Columbia bar to launch a professional misconduct investigation into Clark."

A disgraced Trump loyalist who could unearth details about Trump's attempted coup is meeting with congressional investigators today

    excerpt:

    'Saturday night massacre' redux

Clark's conduct nearly set in motion a Trump-era repeat of the 1973 "Saturday Night Massacre," in which the attorney general and deputy attorney general both resigned in response to then-President Richard Nixon's demand that the Justice Department leadership fire the special prosecutor investigating the Watergate scandal. The resignations marked a turning point in the scandal, prompting Congress to begin impeachment proceedings that would eventually lead to Nixon's resignation — the only time it's ever happened in US history.

Nearly a half-century later, a similar exodus was in the making as Trump desperately sought to hold onto power. Top Justice Department leaders pledged to resign if Trump followed through with ousting the acting attorney general, Jeff Rosen, and replacing him with Clark, who had drafted a letter to elected officials in Georgia calling the state's election results into question.

Trump backed down only after a tense, three-hour meeting in the Oval Office with Clark and Rosen, along with other Justice Department officials and lawyers from the White House counsel's office.

Letter: Former Trump DOJ official declines to answer Jan. 6 questions

    excerpt:

"A top Trump Justice Department official who aided the former president’s quest to overturn the 2020 election met Friday with congressional investigators probing the Jan. 6 Capitol attack — accompanied by a lawyer who worked on a suit aimed at overturning the Georgia election results.

And according to a letter from that lawyer reviewed by POLITICO, former DOJ official Jeffrey Clark is refusing to cooperate with the Jan. 6 select committee.

“Mr. Clark will, of course, abide by a future judicial decision(s) appropriately governing all underlying disputes with finality, but for now he must decline to testify as a threshold matter because the President’s confidences are not his to waive,” reads the letter, dated Nov. 5 and addressed to select panel chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.).

The letter is unusual and surprising; to make the case that Clark cannot testify to the Jan. 6 committee, it cites a separate letter in which Trump’s lawyer specifically said the former president would not try to block Clark’s congressional testimony."

North Carolina Democrats walk out as Republican who admits he was at 6 January riot is sworn in

    excerpt:

"Dozens of North Carolina Democrats staged a walkout after the House welcomed as its newest member Republican Donnie Loftis, who had admitted to being present during the 6 January Capitol riots but denied participating in it.

In a now-deleted Facebook post, Mr Loftis of Gaston County had written that he was close enough when rioters breached the Capitol to be “gassed three times.”

On Monday night, only a few Democrats stayed in the house as Mr Loftis took oath. The former army veteran was elected last month to replace Republican Dana Bumgardner who died of Covid-19 in October, reported Associated Press (AP)."

Loftis was at the Capitol illegally. He was near a door of the Capitol that was broken by rioters. He was at the building which is illegal without permission, regardless of whether or not he went inside. He said he was gassed three times.

    https://www.usnews.com/news/best-st...se-member-says-he-was-at-january-capitol-riot

    excerpt:

"In January, Loftis had posted a picture of himself to Facebook before the rally saying he was on a bus headed to Washington, according to WRAL. The station said it received screenshots of now-deleted posts.

“I got gassed three times and was at the entrance when they breached the door,” Loftis, an Army veteran, posted at the time, according to a screenshot. “I spoke to many service members, and we all agreed that we didn’t want to be there, but we had no other choice. They don’t get it that they work for us. And I mean that in a respectful way.”

When the station asked Loftis for a phone conversation Friday, Loftis said Friday’s statement “is my final word on the matter.”

State law makes Loftis’ elevation to the House essentially automatic given that local Republicans picked him. Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, is obligated to formally appoint him within seven days as a representative, or the House seats him."

The frustrating reality for Trump is that Republican candidate Youngkin won the governorship in VA in an election system that isn't corrupt in 2021 (and wasn't corrupt in 2020), and he did it while distancing himself from Trump because of his personal toxicity.

The template can be used by the GOP for mid-terms in 2022 and the presidential election in 2024.

Retiring GOP lawmaker warns Trump will try to steal the next election - CNNPolitics

    excerpt:

"January 6 was an unconstitutional attempt led by the President of the United States to overturn an American election and reinstall himself in power illegitimately. That's fallen nation territory, that's third world country territory. My family left Cuba to avoid that fate. I will not let it happen here," Gonzalez said.

"I think it's all pushing towards one of two outcomes: He either wins legitimately, which he may do, or if he loses again, you just try to steal it," he added.

Gonzalez was one of numerous Republicans targeted by Trump in the year since the 2020 election after they stood up to his attempts to subvert his election loss to Joe Biden. Many of the GOP officials who took the brunt of Trump's wrath spoke to CNN for "Trumping Democracy: An American Coup," warning about the danger Trump still poses to American democracy as he keeps spreading the lie that the election was stolen from him.

Another squabble over a Trump-inspired election audit.

Dane County judge orders GOP to turn over election review records

    excerpt:

"MADISON — A Dane County judge on Friday ordered Assembly Speaker Robin Vos to turn over records within 10 days about a secretive review of the 2020 election that Republicans have been conducting since this summer.

Circuit Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn ruled the Rochester Republican and Assembly Chief Clerk Ted Blazel were required to release calendars, e-mails, internal reports and other documents maintained by the team conducting the election review.

Bailey-Rihn accused Vos of trying to hide records by conducting a "shell game" that changed who was technically responsible for the records. She ordered Vos to turn over records that were created between May and late August."

"The team reviewing the election has a taxpayer funded budget of $676,000 and is headed by former state Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman, who claimed without evidence last year that the presidential election was stolen."

Alleged Jan. 6 Rioter Tries to Sell Home on Zillow, Inadvertently Reveals Cache of Explosives: FBI

    excerpt:

"A former Green Beret and one-time congressional candidate arrested last month for his alleged participation in the Capitol riot was illegally stockpiling explosives prior to being jailed on charges related to the Jan. 6 pro-Trump siege, according to an FBI search warrant filed Friday in Washington, D.C. federal court. When federal agents searched 47-year-old Jeremy Brown’s Florida home in October, they reported finding a short-barrel rifle, a sawed-off shotgun, more than 8,000 rounds of ammunition, and two hand grenades. But it was a picture included in a sales listing for his house on Zillow that led to his latest troubles. In a photo from “what appears to be Brown’s office,” FBI agents spotted a whiteboard with columns labeled “Food,” “Clothing,” “Shelter,” “Currency,” “Communicate,” “Move,” and “Shoot,” the warrant states. In the “shoot” column, it continues, “there are numerous firearms listed and explosive devices such as ‘flash bangs.’” The entry on the whiteboard indicated that Brown had the flash bangs “on hand,” the filing says, adding that Brown “is not registered to possess explosive devices.”

Agents are now seeking to search a trailer located on Brown’s property, which the FBI believes he bought about a month ago: “t is unlikely that an individual would market a home available for public inspection with guns and explosives inside of the home, [thus] it is probable ammunition, and explosives, which constitute potential evidence in the investigation, have been moved to the RV or trailer,” the warrant states. Brown remains jailed after a judge in October ruled he was a danger to the community."

The audit in WI was announced by Vos on June 27, the day after Trump essentially threatened to have him voted out of office, along with other WI officials, for not doing enough to investigate the 2020 presidential election (and conclude that Trump 'won').

The audit has been headed by a former WI Supreme Court justice, Gableman, and retired police officers who know little about how elections work.

After months of botched efforts, Gableman publicaly admitted that he didn't understand how elections work.

Former state Supreme Court Justice to oversee election review lead by GOP

    excerpt:

"WISCONSIN DELLS - Former President Donald Trump's election loss loomed over the state Republican Party's annual gathering as legislative leaders celebrated their investigation into the contest just hours after the man who spurred those questions berated them for not doing enough.

The convention closed with a symbolic and unsuccessful effort by a small group of delegates to oust Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, underscoring divisions within Wisconsin Republicans over whether and how far to litigate the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

Vos, a Republican from Rochester, announced at Saturday's convention session he was hiring at taxpayer expense a former conservative Supreme Court justice to oversee an investigation by retired police detectives into the election — the third such review Vos has called for.

But just hours beforehand, Trump issued a statement seeking to turn the GOP faithful against Vos and the Legislature's Republican leaders by accusing them of covering up election corruption because the review was not broad enough in the former president's view."

In late July, Vos expanded the investigation of the WI 2020 election.

Speaker Robin Vos announces expansion, more resources, for 2020 election probe

    excerpt:

"The investigation follows unfounded claims of election fraud by former President Donald Trump and other national Republicans, who have called for a broadened probe into the results of the 2020 election, which saw Joe Biden win the state by a little more than 20,000 votes.

There is no evidence of widespread fraud and courts have rejected several lawsuits filed by Trump and his allies attempting to overturn the outcome. Democrats have blasted GOP calls for more investigations as feeding into the lie that Trump actually won the state."

In October, Gableman admitted he doesn't understand how elections work.

Republican reviewing 2020 vote says he doesn't know how elections work

    excerpt:

"GREEN BAY – The attorney leading a partisan review of Wisconsin's 2020 election acknowledged this week that he doesn't understand how elections are supposed to be run.

The admission by former state Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman comes as he subpoenas mayors and election officials.

His comment raises fresh questions about how long Gableman's taxpayer-financed review will take. He called an Oct. 31 deadline set for him by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos of Rochester unrealistic."

Trump bullying GOP WI officials in June 2021.

Trump claims Wisconsin GOP leaders tried to 'cover up' election fraud

    excerpt:

"But just hours beforehand, Trump issued a statement seeking to turn the GOP faithful against Vos and the Legislature's Republican leaders by accusing them of covering up election corruption because the review was not broad enough in the former president's view.

"Wisconsin Republican leaders Robin Vos, Chris Kapenga, and Devin LeMahieu, are working hard to cover up election corruption, in Wisconsin," Trump said in a statement Friday evening.

"Don’t fall for their lies! These REPUBLICAN 'leaders' need to step up and support the people who elected them by providing them a full forensic investigation. If they don’t, I have little doubt that they will be primaried and quickly run out of office.""

After $676,000 of taxpayer money and over four months after the Trump-induced election investigation in WI was announced by Vos, little has happened.

The 2020 election was one year ago.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/10/14/wisconsin-election-review-gableman-errors/

    excerpt:

“I think the only thing he can do that would be helpful is to admit that this was a wrongheaded exercise, that he was the wrong person to do this, that he went in with beliefs about the election not being trustworthy, that he violated all of the standards of normal election reviews,” Burden said. “I don’t see how it’s salvaged other than to simply scrap it and admit it was the wrong way to go.”

The NJ governor race results showed the red mirage that was seen in the 2020 presidential election. Ciatterelli had an early lead but lost it when the urban votes were tallied later.

Ciattarelli Won't Concede to Murphy, Says Election Result Will Be ‘Legal and Fair'

    excerpt:

"Mail ballots made up a little more than 20 percent of all votes in New Jersey. Democrats across the country have dominated mail-in voting since the 2020 presidential election, after former President Donald Trump claimed, without evidence, that they were susceptible to fraud. Since then, Republicans have been much less likely to vote by mail, even in states where they traditionally won the mail vote.

Ciatterelli took the lead in the vote count Tuesday night as Republican-leaning counties reported their votes faster than the more Democratic counties, and with many counties yet to report results from their mail ballots. The race flipped for Murphy Wednesday morning after more votes came in from Burlington, Bergen, Hudson and Camden.

As of Thursday evening, Murphy's lead stood at 44,000 votes out of nearly 2.5 million votes counted. His margin over Ciattarelli was 1.8 percentage points."
