Trump issues statement against Richmond tearing down statue of General Robert E. Lee, calls him a great 'unifying force'

Former US President Donald Trump on Wednesday denounced the removal of a towering statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia. The statue was the biggest Confederate statue in the US.
In an official statement, the former president called the general a "unifying force" who was "ardent in his resolve to bring the North and South together through many means of reconciliation and imploring his soldiers to do their duty in becoming good citizens of this Country."

He went on to say the US would have benefited from having Lee leading the war in Afghanistan. "If only we had Robert E. Lee to command our troops in Afghanistan, that disaster would have ended in a complete and total victory many years ago,"

Lee's leadership of the Confederate Army during the Civil War led to hundreds of thousands of deaths as he fought to defend Southerners' rights to own Black people as property.

    excerpt:

"Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.) is gunning to replace Mr. Raffensperger in Georgia, and he already has Mr. Trump’s endorsement. Mr. Hice led House Republicans in voting against counting electoral votes from swing states that preferred Mr. Biden. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution revealed a letter Mr. Hice sent to Georgia conservatives claiming that the 2020 vote was rife with “systemic voting irregularities and fraud” and that the “back-stabbing” Mr. Raffensperger worked “arm and arm with Stacey Abrams to deliver the presidency and Senate to the radical left.” These are absurd lies; extensive investigation showed no fraud, and Mr. Raffensperger is a stern conservative who wanted Republicans to win — but simply refused to fix the system on behalf of Mr. Trump.

Mr. Hice is hardly the only threat to democracy. Politico points to candidates in Arizona, Nevada and Michigan running to take over the secretary of state’s office in each key swing state. In Arizona, state Rep. Mark Finchem (R) has been a leading advocate for the shambolic vote “audit” that state Republicans are conducting, a conspiracy-fueled mess that has drawn high interest from Mr. Trump and his most dogged supporters, and he has appeared on QAnon-associated programs to promote Trump election lies. Meanwhile, former GOP congressional candidate Jim Marchant, who pushed to have his clear-cut 2020 loss thrown out in court, is running in Nevada, and Kristina Karamo, a supposed election “whistleblower,” is campaigning in Michigan."

Now you gotta wonder, what are they going to put in Robert E. Lee's place. Maybe they can put up a giant bronze pack of famous Richmond cigarettes - you know, the thing that people should be protesting against for killing millions of people.

How about a statue of Martin Luther King? After all the graffiti is removed, of course.

BTW did it ever make a difference that Lee didn't want any statues of him erected?

Trump supporter who chartered four buses for the Capitol riot pleads guilty

    excerpt:

"A Pennsylvania Trump supporter who chartered buses to ferry 200 residents from his hometown to the January 6 US Capitol riots has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour charge.

Frank Scavo organised a convoy to travel from Old Forge to Washington DC for the riots, and was photographed inside the Capitol building, but later lied about unlawfully entering the building.

    (Department of Justice)

“We didn’t see what was going on inside the Capitol,” Scavo said in an interview with the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader, claiming his group had taken photos and left.

In fact, Scavo recorded himself on his cellphone saying “here we go” as he entered the Capitol with the mob.

After he had breached the east side of the building, he posed for a photo in front of a painting with a distinctive face mask on and recorded himself chanting, "God bless America!" and "Treason!", according to the Department of Justice."

Virginia's a weird state, with a higher execution rates than Texas, and if Richmond wasn't within spitting distance of DC, they may have tried to secede from the union again. The Tea Party has trashed out their politics, so bad they withheld the fucking penchant funds of their own state employees for twenty years, knowing damned well they're all democrats.
