Capitol riot lawyer asks to withdraw over break down with client | wusa9.com

    excerpt:

"WASHINGTON — A lawyer for a Texas man who bragged on video about pepper spraying more than a dozen officers on January 6 is asking to withdraw from the case, telling a judge there’s been a “break down in the attorney-client relationship.”

John Hunter Smith, an attorney for Wynne & Smith in Sherman, Texas, filed a motion Thursday asking U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly to allow him to withdraw from representing Daniel Caldwell in an ongoing January 6 criminal case against him.

Caldwell was arrested in February and indicted in March on seven counts, including assaulting police with a dangerous weapon and engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds. According to charging documents, public video from the U.S. Capitol building on January 6 shows Caldwell using a can of chemical irritant to assault police who were attempting to hold protesters back on the Capitol steps."

Donald Duck loves anyone who can get him on the evening news, or sends him a check, and would love for every five year old in the country to send him their life savings. The Taliban would chop off his head and sell it to the highest bidder, but require a dull knife.

I think it suddenly dawned on him that he's facing serious jail time despite any plea deal his attorney tried to broker.

He probably thinks he did nothing wrong and the best his attorney could do is 3-6 years followed by 2 years probation.

Proud Boys supporter pleads guilty to threats he made related fo Trump's riot.

Queens Proud Boys supporter pleads guilty to online threats targeting Sen. Raphael Warnock

    excerpt:

"Eduard Florea, 41, made the chilling threat one day before the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. He’d hoped to join supporters of President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. for the rally that devolved into a riot, but could not find anyone to give him a ride, his wife told prosecutors.

“Florea admits to threatening the life of a successful candidate for the U.S. Senate and to urging others to take up arms to unleash violence at the Capitol on January 6, 2021 to thwart the results of the Presidential election,” said Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District Jacquelyn Kasulis."

Billingsley threatened to hang Pelosi and Schumer.

    January 6 Capitol Riot Arrests

    excerpt:

"Billingsley livestreamed videos of himself attending the Capitol riot via one of his Facebook accounts, according to federal charging documents. One video shows him shouting at police officers, saying "We can do it the nice way or the hard way." He also told another person: "If they contest one state, we're tearing this (expletive) down," referring to the certification of the election. In another first person video, the FBI stated that Billingsley corrected someone who stated they didn't "want to hurt 'em." Billingsley responded: "No, we do want to hurt Pelosi. I do. Yeah, I would hang her from that big -- you see that tree over there? We'd put a rope and hang her. We hang her and Schumer over there.""

Judging by the violence Trump's rioters inflicted onto the police, they likely would have given no less to members of Congress who were essentially defenseless compared to the police.

Five police officers died related to Trump's riot (one stroke victim and four suicides).

Republicans blame Biden for the US's chaotic withdrawal but are glossing over how Trump's Taliban deal set up the disaster

    excerpt:

"A number of congressional Republicans are criticizing President Joe Biden's handling of the US military withdrawal from Afghanistan amid desperate scenes of Afghans scrambling to get on airplanes out of the country.

Yet the decision to leave the country was originally negotiated under President Donald Trump and allowed the Taliban to strengthen their position against the US-backed government — a circumstance most Republicans skirted around in their criticism."

Republicans blame Biden for the US's chaotic withdrawal but are glossing over how Trump's Taliban deal set up the disaster

    excerpt:

"While the Biden administration executed the US withdrawal, it was the Trump administration that brokered a deal with the Taliban to pull out US troops. The agreement, signed in February 2020, stipulated that US troops would be withdrawn from Afghanistan within 14 months. The deal was much criticized for acceding to the Taliban demand of not including the Afghan government. At the time, the Taliban already controlled nearly half the country.

Biden largely upheld the Trump-era deal, though he didn't follow that exact timeline. Many observers said the US's agreement in principle to depart cost it leverage it could have used to compel the Taliban to adhere to the peace deal and a cessation of hostilities.

After the negotiations, Trump began slimming down the US's presence. By mid-January, there were only about 2,500 troops in Afghanistan. To put this into perspective, there were more US troops deployed to Washington, DC, as a result of the January 6 insurrection than the number deployed in Afghanistan."

20 years of 'turning the corner'.

Republicans blame Biden for the US's chaotic withdrawal but are glossing over how Trump's Taliban deal set up the disaster

    excerpt:

"There is ample evidence that the US withdrawal has been rushed and sloppy, particularly when it comes to helping vulnerable Afghans who assisted the US during the conflict. But the US's ultimate failure in Afghanistan cannot be laid at the feet of a single president or administration.

The war in Afghanistan has been chaotic from start to finish, with US troops often unsure of their mission as multiple administrations — both Republican and Democratic — misled the public about the state of the conflict.

Over the years, Americans were repeatedly told that the US was turning a corner in Afghanistan, but there was rarely evidence to back that up. The US invested $83 billion in training and equipping Afghan forces, with little to show for it. The Afghan military consistently struggled with endemic corruption and discipline issues, exhibiting few signs that it could defeat the Taliban without US assistance."
