The writers are letting the viewing audience know that Xena and Gabrielle would be much less likely to go down on each other at night If they had a male traveling companion. A strong male companion would make the series completely heterosexual, but a weak shy male, Lesbian Heaven

 

I watched the show very casually ie. usually hung over and/or when the weather was crappy on a weekend afternoon and there was nothing else to do. So I'm not familiar with that character. I do see your point though.
