Texas senate passes voter suppression bill overnight. Texas GOP’s new voting restrictions on verge of approval By PAUL J. WEBER May 30, 2021 Texas GOP's new voting restrictions on verge of approval excerpt: "AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Republicans in the Texas Senate muscled one of the most restrictive new voting laws in the U.S. to the cusp of the governor’s desk early Sunday, approving fewer ways to cast a ballot and more criminal penalties after rushing the bill to the floor in the middle of the night. The sweeping measure, known as Senate Bill 7, passed along party lines around 6 a.m. after eight hours of questioning by Democrats, who have virtually no path to stop it from becoming law. But the bill must still clear a final vote in the Texas House later Sunday in order to reach Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who is expected to sign it. “I have grave concerns about a bill that was crafted in the shadows and passed late at night,” said Democratic state Sen. Beverly Powell. Under revisions during closed-door negotiations, Republicans added language that could make it easier for a judge to overturn an election and pushed back the start of Sunday voting, when many Black churchgoers head to the polls. The 67-page measure would also eliminate drive-thru voting and 24-hour polling centers, both of which Harris County, the state’s largest Democratic stronghold, introduced last year. Texas is the last big battleground in the GOP’s nationwide efforts to tighten voting laws, driven by former President Donald Trump’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him. Georgia and Florida have also passed new voting restrictions, and President Joe Biden on Saturday unfavorably compared Texas’ bill to election changes in those states as “an assault on democracy.”"
Norfolk man arrested in connection with riot at Capitol. Norfolk man arrested in connection to riot at US Capitol on January 6 | 13newsnow.com excerpt: "According to court documents, the FBI received a tip that a Facebook user who went by "Fam Council" participated in the breach of the Capitol. Investigators found a photo of the suspect who was wearing a helmet with the word "RODBUSTERS" on it. An online search turned up a company called "Rodbusters, LLC" owned by Lazo and his wife. The business' phone number matched a hit from a cell phone inside the Capitol during the riot, and investigators say the same number was tied with the "Fam Council" Facebook page. Subscriber records identified Lazo's wife as the account holder for the phone number. The FBI said the Facebook account was deleted shortly after January 6, but records of the page were recovered with a search warrant, which showed Lazo talking about going to the Capitol on January 6 and also admitting to being there on January 7. Authorities also said multiple photos taken on the day before the riot also show Lazo dressed as the individual later seen inside the Capitol building. Lazo is one of several people in Hampton Roads facing charges in connection with the January 6 riot. His arrest comes on the same day the Senate voted not to create a bipartisan commission to investigate the deadly insurrection."
Their latest plan is to use as many of Trump's loyalists in state legislative bodies, and state elections "power positions" so they could kick out as many Democrat ballots as they can. They already started to fire/remove state attorneys who might get in their way, and started to enact abusive laws to limit Democrat/minority voters. The writing is on their wall: Republicans can't win in the honest American way. Now they rely on crime and their new crime boss leader ... the one with the fake hair do.
I wonder what can be done to make voting less of a hassle. Some states have laws that an outside person can't supply someone in line with water, others don't provide port o potties to voters who could stand in line for hours. Can communities come together, give info as to what you need (registration, photo ID, etc.) before you can vote? Set up booths outside the voting zone where if you show them your voter registration you get a bottle of water? Can nonprofits orgs rent potties to be set up by the voting lines? Maybe hire some street musicians to keep the people entertained while they slowly move along. And tell the people that the politicians who make it difficult to vote must be voted out!
I don’t think that these changes are going to be enough to keep people from voting, especially if it means keeping Trump from running for office again and anyone that lines themselves behind Trump politics, spouting similar rhetoric.
In 2016 I went to vote, here in my hometown, in Indiana. The line of voters was several miles long. There were no facilities available, and no water. We had to vote at the library in Georgetown Plaza at the corner of State and Maplecrest roads. When my turn came, the woman argued with me for twenty minutes, about my three photo identification cards. And she did so knowing that they only had six machines to serve thousands of people. I am very sure many people just gave up and went home without voting.
We need to look at the big picture here. On top of these voting restrictions and the 1/6 attack on the capitol to prevent Mike Pence from declaring the winner after Congress counts the electoral votes, they know Trump loaded the Supreme Court with Republicans. So, legal efforts by Democrats might meet road blocks there. On the state level, Republicans made it legal to take your gun to their state house during a protest. So, when the Republicans do it there, and in Texas with the new carry freely law, it's A OK. In Indiana, where Republicans control the state house, they passed laws where the cops can shoot and kill protestors ... knowing Republicans have what they want so would not protest ... it's to shoot Democrats. Right before the 1/6 attack on the Capitol, Trump and his Defense appointee ordered the Pentagon/Army to not hurt the pro-Trump protestors. That's a contrasting image from what you would see in Indiana. It's also contrasting from Trump's own words where he called for a tough violent response to Antifa and BLM protests in Portland. When the government treats different facets in disparate ways ... well you be looking at discrimination. If you White, you alright. If you Black or Brown, best keep you head down.
‘We should be very worried’: Top Arizona election official sounds alarm over GOP attempts to undermine democracy excerpt: "Two-hundred-and-eight days after Joe Biden became just the second Democrat presidential candidate to win Arizona’s electoral votes since 1948, Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs is still getting death threats. Ms Hobbs, 51, has had to travel with a 24-hour security detail since 7 May, when Governor Doug Ducey assigned Department of Public Safety officers to protect her following her multiple threatening phone calls. One caller asked what she was wearing that day to ensure that she’d be “easy to get”. Another incident involved a videographer from the far-right conspiracy website The Gateway Pundit chasing her and an aide. She also received police protection for a period immediately after the outcome of the 2020 presidential race became clear, when she brought on expert outside counsel to defend Arizona’s election results against lawsuits filed by various pro-Trump groups, including the state Republican party, who sought to challenge the results on dubious grounds."
That Sidney Powell woman is now saying Trump can be reinstated as president and Biden removed from office.
