@Scottishdk you got it!!! This is a piloncillo. Unrefined sugar cane juice boiled, then poured into cone shaped molds. It is then grated for use... I tried to break it with a hammer... no use. I grated some with my box shaped grater and ruined the grater. I then found from my Mexican neighbor that one soaks the end to soften it a bit and then you can get a portion off of the cone. In the past, this was the way sugar was produced for shipping to Europe... but the craze in Europe was for the while refined stuff. The Mexicans prefer the unrefined, it tastes like honey.
That was nothing more than a very accurate guess Zen. I had know idea it actually had a name. I wil need to really up my game. I will think of something.
