    Trump as Jim Jones?

Trump as Jim Jones? | James A. Haught | Bainbridge Island Review

    excerpt:

"Cults usually are one-man religions. A magnetic, dictatorial, dogmatic, demagogue draws throngs of followers and leads them into La-La Land, sometimes dangerously.

Jim Jones took 900 gullible adherents to cyanide suicide.

David Koresh brought 70 Branch Davidians to a fiery death.

Shoko Asahara sent his Supreme Truth believers to plant nerve gas in Tokyo’s subway.

Yahweh ben Yahweh sent loyal cultists to kill dissidents and bring back their ears."

Trump summoned his follows to DC and instructed them to fight like hell at the Capitol to recover what he claimed was an election stolen from him. They obediently obliged.

It caused eight deaths and hundreds of injuries.

Cult Experts Warn That Trumpism Is Starting to Look Awfully Familiar
Calls to sacrifice life to the coronavirus “evoke memories of people lining up to drink cyanide.”

Cult experts warn that Trumpism is starting to look awfully familiar

    excerpt:

"Glenn Beck on Wednesday said that he too was ready to risk his life for the stock market, in a stream following a town hall in which Trump floated a return to reopening businesses and public gatherings by April 12, an ambition that Beck conceded could be a death sentence for thousands of Americans—himself included.

“I’m in the danger zone. I’m right at the edge, I’m 56,” he said while broadcasting from his home studio. “I would rather have my children stay home and all of us who are over 50 go in and keep this economy going and working, even if we all get sick, I’d rather die than kill the country. ‘Cause it’s not the economy that’s dying, it’s the country.”

If all that sounds to you like the dangerous, macabre ramblings of a movement willing to sacrifice human life for illusory gains, you’re not alone. “I dealt with suicidal cults before. I encountered people who are willing to die for their faith, ideology, race, etc. But, I never encountered anyone who is willing to die for someone else’s 401k,” tweeted Ali Soufan, a former FBI agent who now runs an intelligence and security consultancy. “This is a whole new level of craziness.”"

Cult experts warn that Trumpism is starting to look awfully familiar

    excerpt:

"The mass suicides at Jonestown weren’t a necessary part of any prophecy or pre-existing belief system that their leader, Jim Jones, had laid down. Instead, it was a reaction to his power over the cult being threatened. U.S. Courts had ruled that he return the son of two former members; if he ended up surrendering the child, Jones would be compromising the appearance of his total power. The move could have galvanized others to try to get their loved ones out of his compound in Guyana.

“A narcissist was forced to take down hundreds of people because that community was less important to him than the truth that he personally represented,” Zeller said on the phone, describing both Jones’ decision to poison his followers, and Trump’s musings about scrapping social distancing precautions. “Those were murders as well as suicides,” Zeller explained of Jonestown. “Ultimately it was more important for Jones and some of the people at the top of the movement that they all go out rather than be taken down by outsiders.”

Zeller, Hassan, and Shaw noted that the coronavirus’s threat to Trump’s power and presidency and his willingness to sacrifice the lives of his followers is not dissimilar. But while over 900 people died at Jonestown after drinking fruit-flavored punch spiked with poison, Trump’s plan would likely result in tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of deaths, many of which would come from one of the president’s core bloc of followers, the elderly."

“The designation of Trumpers being cultish is insignificant,” Shaw said. “If we accurately describe their behaviors, the evidence is overwhelming that there is a delusional leader who believes themself to be omnipotent with followers who are delusional and believe he’s omnipotent. And that’s a problem.”

Officer who shot and killed Capitol rioter Ashli Babbitt won’t be charged, DOJ says

    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/14/off...r-ashli-babbitt-wont-be-charged-doj-says.html

    excerpt:

"The Department of Justice said Wednesday that it will not pursue criminal charges against the police officer who fatally shot a woman participating in the Jan. 6 pro-Trump invasion of the U.S. Capitol.

Law enforcement officials “determined that there is insufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution” against the U.S. Capitol Police officer, the Justice Department said in a press release.

That determination followed a “thorough investigation” that examined video footage, eyewitness statements and physical evidence surrounding the shooting, the DOJ said."

Trump's rioters at the door to the House lobby should be prosecuted for creating a situation where police officers had to use force to protect members of Congress who were in the lobby and in the House chamber nearby.

U.S. House member James P. McGovern (D-Mass.) was seen in the lobby in a video taken by a protester through a window of one of the doors that were barricaded. The lobby where Ashli Babbitt was shot was the last line of defense against the rioters.

Ashli Babbitt was at the front of the crowd yelling in the faces of officers and chose to try to climb into the lobby through a smashed window when she was shot.

Judge scolds MAGA rioter after authorities find he kept a machete against court orders

    excerpt:

"The Meadville Tribune reports that U.S. Magistrate Judge Richard Lanzillo of the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania angrily rebuked Vorous this week after receiving a report from Pretrial Services claiming that he had been uncooperative with agents and that he continued to possess a machete despite being told that he could not have any weapons in his home as a condition of his pre-trial release.

Vorous's court-appointed attorney claimed that the possession of the machete was a "misunderstanding" and that he only used the large blade to clear out weeds near his house."

US Capitol rioter who tried to flee to Switzerland is jailed pre-trial - CNNPolitics

    excerpt:

"A geophysicist who allegedly beat police officers who were trying to help injured rioters during the US Capitol siege will be jailed before trial, a federal judge ruled Wednesday, citing the man's ham-handed attempt to flee to Switzerland as proof that he poses a literal flight risk.

Judge Emmet Sullivan said Jeffrey Sabol was too dangerous to release due to the flight risk and because he might continue his fight against "perceived tyranny" once he is out of jail.

"He stripped a vulnerable police officer of his police baton," Sullivan wrote in a 64-page ruling. "He then used that stolen police baton to force another officer away from his post and into a mob of rioters who proceeded to viciously attack him, leaving him bleeding from the head."

Sabol was indicted alongside four others who allegedly assaulted the officers, including one who was beaten while being dragged face-down into the crowd. He hasn't yet entered a plea."

Ronald Reagan was an actor and he became President, and to be perfectly honest, I’ll rate the movie Rampage (as bad as it was) over Bedtime for Bonzo (1951) any day of the week.

How Biden’s Approval Rating Compares To Trump, Obama And Other Presidents After Nearly 100 Days

    excerpt:

"Biden’s approval rating hit 60% in an April 9 to April 12 Politico/Morning Consult poll with nearly 2,000 respondents, though his average rating is 53.1% 85 days into his presidency, according to FiveThirtyEight’s running tracker.

By contrast, Donald Trump’s approval rating never cracked 45.5% during the same period of his presidency, and sat at about 41% on day 85.

While Trump’s popularity sagged several points during his first few months in office, Biden’s has consistently remained between 53% and 55%.

Of the last six presidents, only Trump (41.2%) had a lower average approval rating than Biden 85 days in office, though George W. Bush and Bill Clinton both clocked in just a tick higher, at 54.2% and 53.4%, respectively. "

Kansas fight shows how election 'reforms' may favor one side

    excerpt:

"TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Charley Crabtree was looking to help voters in nursing homes get absentee ballots delivered on time last year, so he picked up about 75 from at least 10 locations in his hometown of Lawrence. Republicans who control the Kansas Legislature want to make what he did a crime punishable by up to six months in jail.

Republican lawmakers said they're protecting the integrity of the state's elections by making it less likely that ballots will go missing or get altered. Democrats describe the measure that cleared the GOP-controlled Legislature this month as an attack on get-out-the-vote efforts helping elderly, disabled and poor voters.

The bill also could help Republicans with a key policy goal: saving state abortion restrictions endangered by a Kansas Supreme Court decision in 2019 protecting abortion rights. GOP lawmakers were joined in efforts to revise election laws by abortion opponents who fear that abortion-rights canvassers could collect thousands of ballots to defeat a proposed anti-abortion amendment to the state constitution on the August 2022 ballot."

While Georgia has been ground zero in the election laws fight, it also has come to states that ex-President Donald Trump won, including Florida, Iowa, Kansas and Montana. Iowa last month enacted a GOP-backed law that makes it harder to vote early, potentially disadvantaging Democrats."
