In December 2020, NY city overall had a coronavirus per capita death rate of about 2 per 100,000.

In contrast, the per capita death rate in the twenty worst rural counties across the U.S. is about 352 to 727 per 100,000. That is about 176 to 364 times that of NY.

The coronavirus decimating close-knit rural towns that Trump said he cared about during the 2016 campaign means little to him. In his perception, they are insignificant death toll numbers compared to the absolute numbers of blue state cities that he likes to blame.
