The New Yorkers clinging to the fantasy of a second Trump term
In and near the supposedly liberal metropolis, some believe Trump is still poised for another four years in the Oval Office.

The New Yorkers clinging to the fantasy of a second Trump term

    excerpt:

"Each year, a tiny handful of voter fraud allegations materialise into convictions. Between 2002 and 2005, Minnite found only 24 people were convicted of or pleaded guilty to illegal voting. Other investigations into illegal voting in recent years have yielded similar results.

A five-year probe into voter fraud conducted by the US Department of Justice during the tenure of President George W Bush produced only 86 criminal convictions.

“There’s a low rate of voter fraud convictions because there’s hardly any voter fraud committed,” Minnite said. “When it does happen, law enforcement follows up and does prosecute people.”

Election fraud fearmongering, Minnite said, also functions as a tool of voter suppression, particularly in minority or disenfranchised communities.

“It lays the foundation for justifications for rules to make it harder for people to vote,” Minnite said."

    Giuliani tests positive for coronavirus.

Giuliani has tested positive for coronavirus, Trump says

    excerpt:

"Giuliani's diagnosis comes roughly two weeks after his son, Andrew, who works in the White House, tested positive for coronavirus. But the former New York City mayor opted not to quarantine in the time since as he serves as the lead lawyer for Trump in his unsuccessful bid to undermine the election results.

Instead, Giuliani has been traveling to battleground states to appear at campaign events where he and some GOP lawmakers levied allegations of voter fraud and argued President-elect Joe Biden's victory is invalid. Giuliani has been to Michigan, Pennsylvania and Arizona in the past two weeks alone.

Giuliani has failed to produce any evidence of widespread fraud in court, with judges in Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan all dismissing cases for lack of standing in recent weeks."

Giuliani's last remark in that sketch:

"And if you like what you saw here today, we're having a press conference right after this at the Ritz-Carlton... Plumbing and Heating Supply Company right up I-94 between a dirty movie theater and a crematorium."

Giuliani was admitted to a hospital.

Trump was apparently the first to announce Giuliani's positive test, not Giuliani, a family member, or spokesperson.

Rudy Giuliani tests positive for coronavirus, Trump says - CNNPolitics

    excerpt:

"Giuliani was admitted to Georgetown University Hospital on Sunday, a source familiar confirmed to CNN.

There have been no additional details provided about his condition. It is unclear when Giuliani received a positive test for Covid-19.

Giuliani and his spokeswoman have not responded to CNN's requests for comment.

The former mayor of New York has been crisscrossing the country to battleground states, leading the President's long-shot legal battle to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Giuliani has repeatedly disregarded public health guidelines, appearing maskless in state capitols, hotel ballrooms and at indoor news conferences in recent weeks. At many of the events, most of the other people in the indoor settings were also not wearing masks.

At some of those events, Giuliani was spotted shaking hands, hugging and taking pictures with people while not wearing a mask."

Jerrold Post, CIA psychiatrist who profiled Trump, dies of Covid aged 86
Family salutes ‘insatiable, roving curiosity, probing empathy’
Pioneer in field predicted Trump would not concede defeat

Jerrold Post, CIA psychiatrist who profiled Trump, dies of Covid aged 86

    excerpt:

"Jerrold M Post, a psychiatrist who profiled dictators for the CIA and who declared Donald Trump a “dangerous, destructive charismatic leader”, has died of Covid-19. He was 86.

A pioneer in his field, Post’s assessments of leaders such as Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi and Kim Jong-il helped guide presidents and other US officials.

He brought his work closer to home in his final years, assessing Trump’s rise to power and his relationship with his followers, thoughts he published in book form in late 2019. In an interview at the time, Post accurately predicted the aftermath of Trump’s election defeat.

“I think we can be assured that he will not concede early,” Post told Salon. “Trump may not even recognize the legitimacy of the election.”

Post died on 22 November, after a storied career which included founding the CIA Center for the Analysis of Personality and Political Behavior."

CIA psychiatrist Jerrold Post would normally guide U.S. presidents on how to grapple with world dictators.

Dealing with a U.S. president who thinks and behaves as a dictator and who has formed his own nepotistic Deep State is a problem in itself, plus contending with about 42% of the American public who support such a person.

Republicans Pushed to Restrict Voting. Millions of Americans Pushed Back.
Almost 160 million people voted this year, as new options made necessary by the pandemic removed many of the traditional barriers to casting ballots. Will it change the way America conducts elections?

Republicans Pushed to Restrict Voting. Millions of Americans Pushed Back.

    excerpt:

"With all but three states having completed their final count, and next week’s deadline for final certification of the results approaching, the sheer volume of Americans who actually voted in November was eye-opening: 66.7 percent of the voting-eligible population, according to the U.S. Election Project, a nonpartisan website run by Michael McDonald, a University of Florida professor who tracks county-level data.

It is the highest percentage since 1900, when the voting pool was much smaller, and easily surpasses two high-water marks of the modern era: the 1960 election of John F. Kennedy and the 2008 election of Barack Obama. Since the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which gave women the right to vote and roughly doubled the voting eligible population, turnout had never surpassed 64 percent."

"Though Mr. Trump and the party have not managed to prove a single claim of fraud in the courts — where they and their allies have lost or withdrawn dozens of cases — Republicans at the state level are vowing to enact a new round of voting restrictions to prevent what they claim — without evidence — is widespread fraud."

Trump probably suppressed his own vote by scoffing at mail-in voting which he is now attributing to voter fraud.

Republicans Pushed to Restrict Voting. Millions of Americans Pushed Back.

    excerpt:

"Hawaii, for instance, had the lowest voter participation in 2012 and 2016. But last year, it passed a universal vote-by-mail system, and last month, it experienced the highest voting increase in the country. Early voting increased there by nearly 111 percent compared with 2016, and the state’s turnout of 57.5 percent was up by more than a third over all.

Other states that encouraged voters to use existing mail options also saw their records increase. In Minnesota, which had the highest percentage turnout in the country at 79.96 percent, election officials mailed out ballot applications to every registered voter and ran an $830,000 voter education advertising program to explain options already on the books.

“There was no huge legal shift in the legal terrain, or some new method of voting that was not on the books before,” said Steve Simon, the secretary of state in Minnesota. “This was emphasizing and showcasing an option that had been there for a long time.”"

Trump spent time in MN in the weeks approaching election day thinking that he could win it.

Trump lost to Biden by about 7% in Minnesota.

MN had the highest percentage voter turnout of any state in the 2020 election (79.96%) due to mail-in voting that Trump scoffed.
