You know it is funny, the owners in that area some are black, as is the Cuban Owner. Many of his family members are black as well as him having a gay Bi-racial son. He is even resisting this.

I'm skimming, but I guess I don't think our personal assessment of demographic particulars should color our vision; whether it's for the future or of the past.

This particular post is riddled with opinion about Black Americans or people historically considered "other" or outgroups. In my opinion, many of the posts I'm "skimming" are totally ignoring that lone factor. It is my position that we do African-Americans a disservice when we ignore their previous outgroup status, and that it's important to remind ourselves and our compatriots that these "people" are targets. They're in limbo a lot... a constant state of recovery or remission from racism, and that their fear of the racism shouldn't be undocumented/understated.

It's a very real reality for Blacks to experience racism, racial profiling, prejudiced worldviews, and/or belligerent prejudiced personalities on the internet who voice their concern that the destiny or outcomes of African-Americans shouldn't outshine their personal right to appear 'bigoted and free'.

I think we've lost sight of the goal in the thread here. Back to basics...

We have a fundamental right in this country to assemble. We also have a right to be protected from chaotic assemblies. In the situation in Portland, those two rights are in conflict. Who may intervene? I don't know. Given the pretext of Seattle's autonomous zone, it doesn't seem too far a stretch to deploy additional resources to monitor the situation. Should we question the motive for that given the pretext of the current administration and their questionable agenda? Absolutely. What about the methods with which they intervene on behalf of the government and lay-citizens of Portland? Those are also in question here.

So who exactly is it that's being held to the light? The protesters or the federal response team? If you ask me, I say in this case question the government. But ordinarily as anyone who has payed any attention to the way I post or the ideas I try to convey will tell you, I'm rather establishmentarian. I don't like to question the status quo by my nature. In this case though I don't know that the Trump administration, or rather the federal troops have adhered to the status quo. We should definitely be asking why.

 

I’ve been to a few protests including a gold miners protest against dredging bans, am anti-Iraq war protest, an Occupy protest, and an anti-Obama NDAA protest. They were peaceful too. Don’t tell me what I know, OK.

In this situation we have city mayors fanning the flames of violence by demanding the police to stand down and allow protestors to become rioters, let them loot, tear down statues, destroy public and private property, and let the cities burn as rioters are dismissed of charges and avoid consequences. It happened in Minneapolis, and spread like a virus. The most fucked up part about this is politicians are using their cities and
their inhabitants as sacrificial chess pieces for political gain. This isn’t just a normal peaceful protest where violence is prone to happen.

I think you're partly right. We have our dignity when we send reinforcements to curtail violence. Or if regular police are sent to monitor the state of affairs when citizens assemble in protest, that makes sense to me!

That is worrisome... Do you think that it's a mentality that is shared by a majority of the protesters that leads to such incidents? Do you think they are all brutes and thugs, in other words? I suspect a criminal element just from reading that headline, but I'd be hard pressed to come to any conclusions about the majority of protesters.

EDIT: Things like that are why I feel the protests can be monitored, but perhaps without interference or intervention.
