Australia was once touted as a model for combating the coronavirus. Second waves are happening in the U.S. as well as other countries, in spite of the denial by some politicians.

As parts of Australia go back into lockdown, what hope is there for the rest of the world?

As parts of Australia go back into covid lockdown, what hope is there for the rest of the world? - CNN

    excerpts:

"As well as Australia and Hong Kong, South Korea, China, New Zealand, Singapore and Israel have all reported new infections after initially appearing to beat the virus."

"Melbourne in particular has introduced an intensive lockdown, ramping up restrictions as more and more cases were reported this month.

Melbourne residents are no longer allowed to leave their homes unless it's for grocery shopping, caregiving, exercise or work. Cafes and restaurants that were allowed to reopen weeks ago have again suspended regular services, and are now offering delivery and take-out options only. All beauty services and entertainment venues are also closed."

Trump apparently thinks he can win the white female suburban vote by coercing schools to fully reopen.

He circumvented the CDC by having coronavirus data flow to the HHS instead of the CDC. Now he's preventing Redfield from appearing at congressional hearings.

White House blocks CDC director from testifying before House panel on reopening schools

    excerpt:

"House Education and Labor Committee Chairman Bobby Scott (D-Va.) sent Redfield a letter last week asking him or a CDC designee to testify at a hearing on how K-12 public schools can reopen for in-person classroom instruction this fall. But on Friday, Scott said his panel had been informed that the Trump administration would not allow CDC testimony at the hearing planned for next week.

“It is alarming that the Trump administration is preventing the CDC from appearing before the committee at a time when its expertise and guidance is so critical to the health and safety of students, parents, and educators. This lack of transparency does a great disservice to the many communities across the country facing difficult decisions about reopening schools this fall," Scott said in a statement.

A senior administration official said that Redfield has already testified before Congress at least four times in the last few months."

Civil rights activist John Lewis dies.

Trump insulted him via Twitter on the weekend of Martin Luther King day in 2017.

Obama awarded Lewis the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Trump awarded it to Rush Limbaugh.

John Lewis, US civil rights hero and Democratic congressman, dies at 80

    excerpt:

"In Selma, Alabama, in 1965, as activists tried to cross the Edmund Pettus bridge, Lewis was walking at the head of the march with his hands tucked in the pockets of his overcoat when he was knocked to the ground and beaten by police. His skull was fractured. Nationally televised images of the brutality forced attention on racial oppression in the south. That incident, along with other beatings during peaceful protests, left Lewis with physical scars for the rest of his life.

Within days, King led more marches in Alabama. President Lyndon B Johnson soon was pressing Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act. The bill became law later that year, removing barriers that had barred black people from voting.

Lewis was elected congressman for Georgia’s fifth district in 1987 and held the office until his death. He announced he was being treated for stage 4 pancreatic cancer in December last year."

The Trump administration's strategy to win the suburban women vote doesn't appear to be working.

Trump's effort to reopen schools is one tactic. Another is to paint Biden as someone who will destroy the suburbs.

Pandemic surge damages Trump, boosting Biden's White House bid: POLL

    excerpt:

"Biden now leads by 25 points among women, double his margin in late March, and is a non-significant +4 among men, compared with -9 among men then. This includes a broad 60-36% Biden lead among suburban women, compared with a virtual dead heat among suburban men, 49-45%, Trump-Biden.

Biden holds a 30-point lead among college graduates, 63-33%, vs. +15 points in late March. (Hillary Clinton won this group by just 10 points in 2016, 52-42%.) And Trump has gone from an 18-point lead among white registered voters to a scant 4 points now, while 94% of Black registered voters support Biden."

Fauci's assessment of a possible second wave of the virus in the U.S. turned out to be more accurate than that of Birx.

Birx on various occasions has seemed apologetic to Trump.

Inside Trump’s Failure: The Rush to Abandon Leadership Role on the Virus
The roots of the nation’s current inability to control the pandemic can be traced to mid-April, when the White House embraced overly rosy projections to proclaim victory and move on.

Inside Trump’s Failure: The Rush to Abandon Leadership Role on the Virus

    excerpt:

"The New York region appeared well on its way to driving new infections down to levels it could handle — it was the one area of the country that did resemble the Italian model. But the models and analysis embraced by the West Wing failed to account for the weakening adherence to the lockdowns across the country that began even before Mr. Trump started urging governors to “liberate” their residents from the methodical guidelines his own government had established.

Later, it was clear that states that rushed to reopen before meeting the criteria in the guidelines — like Arizona, Texas and Alabama — would have among the worst surges in new cases.

Dr. Birx’s belief that the United States would mirror Italy turned out to be disastrously wrong. The Italians had been almost entirely compliant with stay-at-home orders and social distancing, squelching new infections to negligible levels before the country slowly reopened. Americans, by contrast, began backing away by late April from what social distancing efforts they had been making, egged on by Mr. Trump.

The difference was critical. As communities across the United States raced to reopen, the daily number of daily cases barely dropped below 20,000 in early May. The virus was still circulating across the country.

Italy’s recovery curve, it turned out, looked nothing like the American one."

An exception is when she was at a Trump virus press conference (campaign rally) when Trump started talking about UV and disinfectants in the body. Birx was squirming in her chair. Her body language was what would be seen in a parody sketch.

A reminder of what Fauci said back in March

170,000 +/- 70000 deaths, and no mention of by which date that was supposed to happen with a whopping 41% margin of error

Such an estimate could have been given by a junior high student

Coronavirus May Kill 100,000 to 240,000 in U.S. Despite Actions, Officials Say

Article also reminds us of the Imperial College of London estimate of 2.2 million deaths in the US with no lockdown, 1.1 million even with lockdown by 1st Aug. That is the report mainly responsible for the push for lockdowns in the UK and US

The latest rhetoric given by Pence sounds like a description of Trump.

Trump has been a Trojan horse for Putin and other dictators of the world.

Trump resorts to new attack on Biden as socialist Trojan horse

"Vice President Mike Pence made the case Friday during a trip to Wisconsin. “Joe Biden would be nothing more than an auto pen, a Trojan horse for a radical agenda so radical, so all encompassing that it would transform this country into something utterly unrecognizable,” he said."

The state of the economy has been the only metric that Trump has scored better than 50% approval, leaving him no other attributes about himself upon which to rely. He is now failing on that particular attribute.

Even the economy attribute of Trump was garnered by him borrowing about $3 trillion dollars to juice an already good economy that he had inherited from Obama. Any president could have used such an easy move to temporarily garner political points.

Add national debt as another parameter for which Trump has made no progress.

He claimed he would reduce it to zero within 8 years. He used a hapless claim that reducing the trade deficit would somehow reduce the national debt. He increased it by about 3 trillion in 3 years, not including a few trillion more for damage control for the coronavirus that went rampant because of his failed leadership.

The latest from Trump's handlers is to use his secret militarized police to instigate conflict in places like Portland to use as a backdrop to try to paint Biden as part of the radical left to scare the White suburban vote.

Trump is also sticking his head in the sand about the coronavirus and blaming his poor response on something that Biden supposed did circa 2009 during the bird flu outbreak that allegedly badly crippled his ability to respond to the coronavirus.

Before he was elected,Trump said that he loves debt and loves to play with it.

He lost a court case about his engaging in behavior that used his own property that was in debt as leverage to try to buy more property. As the judge read the ruling, Trump sat in the court quietly with a frustrated look on his face. It was a controlled situation where he couldn't do his typical emotional outbursts.

Videos of Trump's court cases are worthy of viewing. He is de-fanged of all his loud, empty bluster. It makes him look like a different person and one who is being put in his place.

We now have 140,000 with 1000 new deaths reported yesterday. It's been estimated we'll reach a peak of 2000 a day by late August.

We're right on track to reach those numbers and If the Director of the CDC is right in his speech just a few days ago,
    "This is just the beginning"
