The fairness doctrine of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, was a policy that required the holders of broadcast licenses to both present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was—in the FCC's view—honest, equitable, and balanced.

The FCC abandoned the Fairness Doctrine under the Reagan administration in 1987.

I think it time to consider something like the Fairness Doctrine but it would have to be reallt thought through.

We have Ofcom in the UK that is supposed to make sure there is ‘Due impartiality and due accuracy’ that is supposed to give balance but that is for broadcasters and radio but not the press and the main political bias and inaccuracies come from our wealth owned press.

It has also been subverted for example the BBC has been attacked by the right (and sometimes the left) for not showing ‘due balance’ that it often plays it too safe and gives equal time to two sides that are in fact not equal (like climate change).

Unfortunately the FCC has nothing to do with cable TV, only broadcast TV.

Yes but i wasn't particullay just thinking of reserecting the Fairness Doctrine but something like it that was fit for the 21 Century, for example including the web which would be tricky thats why i think there is a good debate needed onthe subject - LOL we could even begin it here?

Since I'm a fairly healthy 56yo man, I'm going with the statistics and saying neither.
Are you so convinced you're going to become gravely ill or die that you've preplanned what will be written on your ventilator or pine box?

Measures were taken not just to protect yourself but others you might be healthy (although many healthy people have died) but there are other who are not or otherwise might die.

Spreading a disease because you think you are ok seems a bit abhorrent.

Measurements aren't exactly the issue. I'm healthy because I'm not out licking things like escalator handrails testing fate.
Why were criminals released instead of given masks, like we're asked to wear?
Why were big box stores allowed to pretty much operate in normal fashion while smaller shops had to close for our safety?
Why weren't people allowed to swim in the ocean?
Why was it suddenly ok to gather in masses to protest , riot and loot but dangerous to attend a concert or political rally?
Why could you gather at target or Walmart but not at your place of worship?
If you don't see the hypocrisy in the randomly selected attempts at controlling every American's right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, I don't think there's anything that can be said to change the way you see things.
It's my opinion that every American citizen had their constitutional rights violated in order to save us instead of being free to save ourselves.
That's not the American I want.

Then, as you right wingers have always said "America love it or leave it" bye. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I've noticed Fox changed. They used to have a morning show that I actually thought was kind of cool. Good Day LA. They may still have it, but I hadn't seen it in the last few years at the gym; maybe because I was their early. But they always had Fox brand news on the set, and what I noticed was this: It got a little trashy in that they would try to make what the president was doing seem like it was better than what social norms would suggest or than what an average American citizen would conclude. It was kind of slimy in a way and I gradually lost respect for what they were doing. As one example, I was saying earlier how I used to like Neil Cavuto. But the mighty have fallen as well...

EDIT: Jillian Barberie* she was there in the nineteen nineties, but I don't know about now. That was when I liked to watch their brand of morning banter.

Thanks, but I'll be sticking around because I do love it. I'll be doing my part in November to make sure that those who think they can arbitrarily take away my rights only have a say in what's in their own refrigerator.

I like Tucker Carlson's resting dumb face. At first I thought he was doing it on purpose. Like a sign that he can't stand his guest but he does it all the time. Most of these hosts are playing a character. A fool and his money are easily parted. If the money was in saying the opposite they would to that. It's not even "news" here it's considered entertainment because it has no facts.

Why don't you do those things? Apparently you do have at least a rudimentary understanding of germs, viruses and how diseases are spread. Seems to me that when a pandemic is raging, you might see the need to take extra precautions. You seem to be relying a lot on your age, general good health, and natural imunities that have seen you through thus far to protect you. But this is something new. You may not have immunities from this. Statistically, you have a better chance of surviving the virus than an eighty year old, but 50 something isn't that young, the disease can take a toll on the best of us. And do you just not give a damn about other people?

I suppose it was because they're living in close quarters where social distancing is difficult.

Where did that happen? In my state, stores that sold groceries and basic supplies were allowed to stay open, and the ones selling non-essentials or posing special risk of personal contact (beauty salons, barber shops, restaurants) were closed.

Because concerts, sporting events and political rallies are scheduled event held indoors with people sitting close together for long periods of time. Protests tend to be spontaneous events, held outdoors, guided by overriding emotions that defy rational regulation, and many of the protestors were wearing masks. Resistance would be futile!
It wasn't the oceans that were the problem; it was the beaches, where social distancing wasn't happening.
Because Wal Mart and Target are selling groceries and essential items, and taking precautionary measures for social distancing. Places of worship tend to pack people together in close quarters where there's a lot of singing, sermonizing, and other activities that spread germs and viruses.

Drawing lines is always somewhat arbitrary, but has to be done for public health and safety. Why do we have to stop at red lights or stop signs when there's no traffic coming? Why can't you keep farm animals or burn rubber tires in your own backyard in a residential neighborhood even on your own property? I think most of us know the answer. Your right to swing your fist stops where my nose begins. That "pursuit of happiness" rhetoric is great for the Fourth of July, but legally only your right to life, liberty and property is protected by the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, and then only if the government has no rational basis for restricting them. What's the big deal about wearing a mask in a building?
