Joe Biden says he would not pardon President Trump

Former Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday that he would not pardon President Donald Trump if elected and insisted any prosecutorial decisions would be left to a more independent Justice Department.

Answering questions in a virtual town hall-style event on MSNBC Thursday, the Democratic presidential hopeful was asked by a voter about whether he'd follow the lead of former President Gerald Ford, who pardoned Richard Nixon in large part to help the nation move beyond the Watergate scandal.

Biden, while not speaking to any specific potential charge, committed to ensuring that any prosecutorial decisions would be dictated by the law, in contrast to what he called the "dereliction of duty" by Trump and his attorney general, William Barr.

"It's hands off completely. The attorney general is not the president's lawyer. It's the people's lawyer," Biden said. "We never saw anything like the prostitution of that office like we see it today."

During the exchange, Biden was also asked to clarify whether he was aware of or participated in decisions related to incoming Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn during his final weeks as vice president in 2017. The president and his allies this week have accused Biden and former President Barack Obama of a conspiracy to entrap Flynn as part of a larger scheme to undercut the incoming administration, which they have dubbed "Obamagate."

The Justice Department announced last week their intent to drop the case against Flynn, a decision the judge in the case is now weighing after Flynn pleaded guilty in 2017 to lying to the FBI.

"I was never a part or had any knowledge of any criminal investigation into Flynn while I was in office, period. Not one single time," Biden told O'Donnell.

The answer clarified what he had told ABC's George Stephanopoulos days earlier when asked about a January 5 meeting in the Oval Office in which Flynn was discussed. Biden was asked how he didn't know anything about the FBI investigating Flynn at the time when "you were reported to be at a Jan. 5, 2017, meeting where you and the president were briefed on the FBI's plan to question Michael Flynn over those conversations he had with the Russian Ambassador Kislyak."

That question was not accurate, according to a senior Obama administration official with direct knowledge of the meeting, who said the meeting did not include any discussion of an FBI investigation into Flynn or of FBI questioning of Flynn about his contacts with the Russians.

Much of Thursday's hour-long Q&A with Biden was focused on how he as president would respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, and included a notable personnel commitment.

"I hope if I'm president that Dr. Fauci will stay on in the administration," Biden said, offering a vote of confidence in the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases as Trump has ratcheted up criticism of him.

 

There are rich, greedy Dems too. I'm sure they don't refuse tax breaks. The rich take care of the rich first, but at least the Dems do things legislatively that help the old, the infirm, the veterans, the sick etc., stick up for workers' rights, and protect the environment. I'm NOT for handing money to people who can work - but CHOOSE not to, or do / sell drugs, are in gangs, etc.

But when it comes to people going to work and jobs - who is going to FORCE companies to come back to the U.S.A.??? Rump isn't going to - that was just another one of his slimy, false sales pitches. And with automation, robotics, and software that can do everything many people can do - explain to me and all the others HOW this is going to work??? Jobs are being lost by the millions to automation - in a very short time span. Many financial magazines that I've read for decades say millions MORE will be lost to automation, - accounting for example. So with most workers making so little pay they can't save much, if any, money - how do they pay for re-training and how long must they go without a pay check or income of any kind WHILE they get this so-called "re-training" for what new jobs??? How many people / couples have $15,000 per year for 4 years laying around for college to train for a "good job" ??? Businesses always look to eliminate jobs / payroll ………. that's why they automate everything. Businesses have job openings because they have no other choice but to hire. They don't create jobs because they love their fellow man & want them to do well. Stop living in a dream world.

Politicians of any stripe verbalize ALL SORTS of rosy-sounding, quick answers about jobs, and bringing back manufacturing to the "good old U.S.A." to grease voters …………….. who anxiously and hungrily slurp it all down so they feel better ( but the feeling is only temporary.) Getting REALLY engaged in fixing long-standing problems is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH harder than some slippery words flowing from forked tongues.

Question: For all the tax breaks given by Republicans over several decades that were promised to create new jobs - WHERE ARE THEY??? Clerking in stores of any sort for 1980 pay rates can NOT support families. So - where are all these good-paying new jobs???? Where are all the new factories that pay upwards of $18 per hour and with benefits too????????

It's a long-used, time-worn fairy tale, people............................... more tax breaks for the rich WILL NOT bring back manufacturing or create new, good-paying jobs. Look at the evidence, look at the handwriting on the wall, look at the tracks in the snow. It's ALL LIES to get your vote.

The damaging effects of avoidable crises manufactured by Trump on the ability to gapple with unexpected real crises that arrive later is underestimated. The U.S. is currently trying to survive the one-two punch that Trump unwittingly inflicted onto the country.

Trump is now on another one of his carnival barking campaigns promising to undo the damage that he inflicted. Unlike during his 2016 campaign when he falsely claimed American Carnage due to his predecessors, this time the carnage is real.

 

This is pretty common in abusive relationships too. One person (Trump) is nasty all the time and says you are too sensitive or not understanding the situation. Yet their emotions are SUPER important and they will always shame you if they feel bad.

He often uses words like rude or nasty for reporters for this reason. It's fine for him to have mean nicknames but not fine to challenge him. It's part of the narcissist mind. They only feel for themselves.

If you need a gun all the time to stop a mass shooting why do you not wear a mask to stop a pandemic? The idea seems to be personal safety and helping others. The same orange NRA types who are protesting would also probably love to talk about the good guys with guns. It's not just about them it's about loving your fellow Americans. They don't apply this logic now. Could it be that it's not really about love? It's about enjoying the idea that you are feared. People won't fuck with you because they don't want to die. Masks are not scary unless the person wearing it also has a gun and demands your cash.

Plus dear leader does not wear one. So it's the American thing to do. Screw other people and have the personal responsibility to stay home. The strange thing to me is that Trump voters seem to accept the virus is a problem. They might not even plan to go out. But the idea they are told they can't is upsetting. Common sense is not common and we see that now.

What It Means When Trump Doesn't Wear A Mask

Trump first addressed the notion of a mask a month ago ("I don't think I'm going to be doing it") when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended the practice. This week he left Washington to tour, of all things, a Honeywell mask-manufacturing site in Phoenix. Once there, he wore protective goggles over his eyes — but no mask.
This immediately reminded people of Vice President Pence's tour of the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota on April 28. Pence, who leads the White House task force on the virus, wore no mask at Mayo, even though all the officials and medical personnel clustered around him did. The widely republished photographs of him elbow-bumping with masked patients made this painfully clear.


Initially, Pence offered explanations and debated the rules. Days later, Pence relented and said he should have worn a mask while in a hospital.


Trump, however, was not apologetic after his visit to Honeywell this week, claiming he had put on a mask at the plant "backstage" before being told he did not have to wear one.

Amazingly enough, masks seem to be turning into one more emblem of our political polarization. Wear one and you are taking the virus and the social distancing prescription seriously. Refuse, and you signify something else that may be denial or even defiance

 

or don't agree with him.
