The performance of the stock market is critical for Trump. The economy is the only parameter for which Trump has had an approval rating higher than 50%. It has offset his other dismal parameters, such as foreign policy and race relations, that have been in the 20's and 30's percent range to yield him an overall approval of about 42%.

Trump's lack of any other parameters to cushion him places him in a vulnerable position. Judging by his obvious nervousness lately, he's aware of this.
