Female Chinese authors: Sun Shuyun Xinran Jung Chan After I read The Good Women of China which was both heartbreaking and enlightening I decided to investigate more.
It's pretty good, it's not as action packed as Fight Club but I really liked the way it was written. I wish I knew literary techniques better to explain it, but if you enjoy his work, I recommend it. He's really adept at discussing actual activities and customs we take at face value and fictionalizing (don't know if that's a real word) people/society twisting them ever so slightly to where like they still seem plausible but have a dystopian or maybe nihilistic tinge to them.
^ good description, I agree. My error has been to read three of them in succession. That's no good because they blend together in my memory now. Survivor, invisible monsters and lullaby. I just looked and I can see them on my shelf still. This has inspired me to reread one this summer.
I just read this and i liked it. Really felt like an development story for The Shadow. I really liked how The Shadow helped to mold Batman in a way but like Batman points out at the end when talking about Dick Grayson that the pupil should surpass the teacher at some point. I know The Shadow isnt part of the main DC universe but it would certainly work if he was. Maybe one day they'll retcon it as part of the universe because I'd love to see more of The Shadow interacting with DC Heroes and villains. Now I want to read the follow up...
At first I found the writing style not my taste. Short sentences that I don't really like. Never have. < that last bit is an example of what I mean. But it's gripped me now and I can look past that. Also I thought he was over explaining some things then I realised it was published in '92. I love the serious nature of pizza delivery, how there is a slightly comical aspect that is very subtle.
^ Very disappointed in this book's discussion of Sgt. Peppers by The Beatles. I knew there were some critics that panned the album upon release but from most accounts I've heard, it was monumental to that generation and was revolutionary to psychedelic rock in many respects. This book basically glossed over the album.

Have you seen the film (Unbearable Lightness)? I loved it and then read the book, which I also enjoyed.
I havent. I just found out it was a movie the other day when I ordered the book. I'll prpbably watch it after I read the book...and end up hating it because I hate just about every movie where I read the book first. Maybe I should do it the other way around
No, I don't think it will matter in this case. Read the book. Who cares if you hate the film later? It's Daniel Day-Lewis though, and he makes most films great. It's veeery looooong. More like two films.
On the road ! when I was at Manchester Airport last week they had a rack ( WH Smiths ) of classic books and I thought " You know what " not read it far years, but Man its still the best !!!
