I didn't want to paraphrase her, so I emailed her and asked her to tell me again:

"Now, why is Star Trek so awe inspiring..
It is hard to describe it really, but I will try..
Star Trek is many things, not just one. It was written by an brilliant man called Gene Roddenberry in 1966, before humans even went to space and although the way he materialised his thoughts, was somewhat simplistic (like eating colourful cubes of what it looked like Plasticine as their food), he embedded in the story a very strong concept. The one of an idealistic human society living in peace, having overcome the perils of egoism, greed and fear. Technology supposedly has grown so advanced, were there is no money. (everyone who works, work to exactly the field they desire and do not get paid for it. Everyone is a professional hobbyist if you like.) There is no hunger. (You can use machines that are called "replicators" and they can materialise any item -at all- out of it's fundamental elements - a bit like 3D printing but without the plastic). People have focused their lives on space exploration (which is now doable because they use a concept, called "Warp Drive" -a technology which is based on Einstein/Rosen bridge, a wormhole in short-, which can bend space giving you the ability to travel faster than the speed of light). Also the galaxy is filled with countless other evolved species with whom we collaborate and there is a galactic government called "The United Federation of Planets". All these species are in peace and full collaboration with each other giving a deeper meaning to the whole notion of race and the differences (or better the similarities) between us all.
The first series is imaginative, touching on the concept of "God", time travel, and morality. The focus is always on the reactions of the characters. How these people deal with various struggles and problems that they come across. How do they deal with their own interpersonal differences too. It is very good, but only the beginning. The next series (called Star Trek: The Next Generation) takes these concepts and deepens even more. You get to love the characters and their unique personalities. Something new and imaginative happens in every episode but the focus is always sociological. How will the captain balance it all? The unique ability they have to respect every other member fully and help others, solve problems, explore new regions of space and time. It is truly one of its kind.
It was incredibly original and broke a lot of taboos like the Android who wants to be a human and wants to feel human emotions, a child given the ability to expand his knowledge and become a valuable member of the crew, a female captain, a black captain etc. It may seem like a simple thing to us now, but in 1968 when Lieutenant Uhura was in charge of communications on "Enterprise", she was the very first black female to have an important and credible role in a world where white males ruled. Before then, when a black woman was appeared on TV she was always either a maid or a slave. This influenced the way people were seen. Young Whoopi Goldberg for example, later to cast as Guinan in The Next Generation, saw Uhura and famously said "Momma! There's a black lady on television and she ain't no maid!".
Also, I do not want to leave out the other important role of science fiction which is to say that science fiction can and does become science fact. Star Trek influenced scientists to develop so many of the things that we use today. A small list would include: Bluetooth earphones, mobile phones, tablets, 3D printing, teleportation machines (only able to teleport particles so far but still amazing), holograms and holographic cameras, laser surgery and so many other ones to come in the future.
We first imagine it, then we study it and then we develop it.
To wrap it up, I think that Star Trek shows us a utopia future were all the positive aspects of the human nature have prevailed and we all work together for the greater good to expand our horizons and evolve. It hits the right spot every time and there is no other fictional world that does it quite so well in my opinion. (New Star Trek excluded. Discovery is the first time that Star Trek disappointed me and that is because it ignored those fundamental values and ethics and focused on what sells best in our day and age: fashion and flashing effects!)

I encourage anyone with an open mind to watch it for its eloquent beauty, hopeful thoughts for a bright future and imagination."

of course that DOES all depend on what you intend to replace it with.
the anasaza abondond their cities for a good reason. they didn't walk of the edge of the earth though. they're still there as the dene and the zuni and perhaps others.
problem is with there being too many humans to survive without infrastructure. but there's no law in the universe that requires infrastructure to be centralized, nor hierarchal.
