The killer was identified as 28-year-old Ian David Long, a former machine gunner and veteran of the war in Afghanistan who was interviewed by police at his home last spring after an episode of agitated behavior that they were told might be post-traumatic stress disorder.

Long was in the Marines from 2008 to 2013, rose to the rank of corporal and served in Afghanistan in 2010-11, the military said.

Authorities said he had no criminal record, but in April officers were called to his home, where deputies found him angry and acting irrationally. The sheriff said officers were told he might have PTSD because of his military service. A mental health specialist met with him and didn’t feel he needed to be hospitalized.

Tom Hanson, 70, who lives next door to Long and his mother, said Thursday that he called the police about six months ago when he heard “heavy-duty banging” and shouting coming from the Longs’ home.

“I was concerned because I knew he had been in the military,” he said.

Hanson said the sheriff’s deputy who arrived took his information, but he never learned more about what happened and hadn’t spoken to Long since then. He said he was “dumbfounded” by the bloodshed.

How are you going to confiscate over 400 million guns?

He believes that the state police in each state should go to each home/building/pole barn and search for guns. If the homeowner has a business building, say a repair garage or gas station, then search that too.

That is no joke. That is a direct quote from him.

One at a time, house after house, business after business. Congress can allocate proper funding for the task force. There have been 307 mass shooting in the last 311 days. We've had enough of the assholes who kill people when they can't have things their own way.

People don't forget. That guy in Las Vegas shot nearly 600 people and killed 58 of them. This is a good time to speak up about the repeal of the Second Amendment.

Oh yeah! Great idea . . . as long as the murdering types don't hide their guns by burying them in order to avoid confiscation.

Wait! I've got it! Just before the nationwide gun-confiscation begins, make it a law that everyone must keep their guns in their house, garage, poll building, or business. Then no one will hide them because if there's one thing that criminals and murderers are notorious for, it's obeying the law.

So I feel like we're turning a blind eye to this sort of thing if we do nothing policy wise. But what can be done? Perhaps it's a good time to discuss ammo purchases and magazine capacity. In the wake of this tragedy, I'm no more fond of guns than I was previously. It's not only in my state, it's in my county, and in an area I'm totally and completely familiar with. This and the woman who was murdered at the mall in T.O. (Thousand Oaks) make me wonder what exactly is it we are dealing with.

My thoughts and prayers go to the families and friends of those who lost their lives. But what is this? Do people see it, internalize it, and then somehow perpetuate this violence? I wonder if this can be because the shooter was a combat veteran. Does it mean we don't trust veterans? Do they all have PTSD? I know they don't. But maybe the military should have something in place that requires interaction on some level in an effort to prevent this sort of thing form happening. wtf

  11. My wife and I went through that with the Pulse night club in Orlando. No direct friends, but one was the friend of a friend.

Australia did it in 1996, new set of gun laws, gun buy back scheme that was huge (for us)

Firearm homicide rate dropped in half, it wasnt very high to begin with

But our non firearm related homicide rate dropped by about the same amount in the same time frame as well, economy had been motoring along quite nicely in the same time frame

There have been 307 mass shootings in the last 311 days. About 650,000 people have been killed with guns in the USA since 1980. Nearly 600 people were shot in Las Vegas. We just saw what happened to all the innocent people who were in their own house of worship in Pittsburg. Now this in California? I say for the good of the country we need to do something about the damn guns. The easiest way is to repeal the Second Amendment.
