They've become radio staples with their most recent album with singles like Feel It Still and Live in the Moment but I was introduced to Portugal. the Man for this 2009 release. The melodies were quite refreshing from the other indie stuff going on at the time, different than the fuzz driven garage rock sound or the eccentric off kilter experimentation.

    Foreigner 1984

I do like Kelly Hansen singer better than Lou Gramm...so I am not loyal here...although i always loved Foreigner and all of their songs....but I saw Foreigner twice in the last few years with Kelly, but never saw Lou perform, so that could be why... I like Kelly.

This is not my favorite song from the band, so I don't know if I am deviating from the intended purpose of this thread however I feel Tool is mostly an album band, where the album needs to be experienced in it's entirety or at least whole Sides at a time and so some of their most powerful songs take place within the context of the albums.

With this 2006 song, I feel Maynard's lyrics are more transparent than many of them, with perhaps a (slightly) tongue-in-cheek pessimism about the nature of human divisiveness. Danny Carey is probably my favorite drummer and this song features many of my favorite aspects of his drumming, often driving the song with syncopated beats that have an almost tribal feeling to them and a great tablas solo featured at ~4:10 here. I really like Tool's cability in expressing soft/loud dynamics, it makes their heavier metal edge that much more powerful when it hits.

Speaking of melancholy, my favorite song off Smashing Pumpkin's Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. This song is so nostalgic for me it makes the past feel more real than the present
