The biggest problem isn't the Electoral College but the winner-take-all system for electing the electors, which all but two states (Maine and Nebraska) have. This system effectively disenfranchises people like me, since I live in one of the reddest of red states. And it makes no sense at all, except in crassly partisan political terms. It could probably be changed by an ordinary piece of legislation, but might need a constitutional amendment. The original purpose of the Electoral College was not to shore up the power of the small states but to assure that the people electing the electors would be a notch above the ordinary voter and would make discerning choices. That sure didn't work out. The electors are party hacks. As more elections go by where the candidate losing the popular vote wins, people may get cynical about the blessings of our system and what a wonderful democracy it is.
Trump has escalated his 'Deep State' claim to 'Criminal Deep State.' With ‘Spygate,’ Trump Shows How He Uses Conspiracy Theories to Erode Trust By Julie Hirschfeld Davis and Maggie Haberman May 28, 2018 With ‘Spygate,’ Trump Shows How He Uses Conspiracy Theories to Erode Trust excerpt: “He’s the blame shifter in chief,” said Gwenda Blair, a Trump biographer. “Conspiracies, by definition, are things that others do to you. You’re being duped; you’re being fooled; the world is laughing at us. It goes to this idea that you can’t believe anything that you read or see. He has sold us a whole way of accepting a narrative that has so many layers of unaccountable, unsubstantiated content that you can’t possibly peel it all back.” Like most conspiracy theories, Mr. Trump’s latest has a kernel of truth many Republicans have latched on to. Several news organizations, including The New York Times, have reported that an F.B.I. informant contacted Trump campaign aides who evidence suggested had had suspicious contacts with Russians in 2016 as part of a counterintelligence investigation into possible efforts by Moscow to meddle in the election. In Mr. Trump’s telling, however, the informant was a spy sent by Mr. Obama and a cabal inside his Justice Department and the intelligence community who were bent on stopping his candidacy."

Instead of expressing concern about Russian intereference in the midterm elections, Trump is claiming that the Mueller investigation will be meddling with the midterms. Offering No Evidence, Trump Says Mueller’s Investigators ‘Will Be Meddling’ In Midterms Another day, another attempt by Trump to discredit the Russia probe. By Hayley Miller 05/29/2018 09:22 am ET Offering No Evidence, Trump Says Mueller's Investigators ‘Will Be Meddling’ In Midterms | HuffPost excerpt: "President Donald Trump dubiously suggested investigators from special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe “will be meddling” in the upcoming midterm elections. Trump tweeted Tuesday that “13 Angry Democrats” assigned to the investigation plan to attempt to interfere with the elections, most of which will be held on Nov. 6. As usual, he failed to mention that Mueller himself is a lifelong Republican."
Nixon Plot Against Newspaper Columnist Detailed By Michael Isikoff National investigative correspondent NBC News updated 9/13/2010 5:37:18 PM ET Nixon plot against newspaper columnist detailed excerpts: "Nearly 40 years before the Obama White House denounced the WikiLeaks website for publishing classified documents, another president, Richard Nixon, was even more obsessed with the same phenomenon. Only Nixon and his top aides went to far greater lengths to deal with the problem: They launched an extraordinary campaign to smear and discredit the journalist who, more than anyone else, was bedeviling them by publishing government secrets: newspaper columnist Jack Anderson." "Feldstein also has uncovered new evidence that documents one of the more outrageous schemes of the Nixon presidency: a plot to assassinate Anderson by either putting poison in his medicine cabinet or exposing him to a “massive dose” of LSD by smearing it on the steering wheel of his car. While the aborted scheme to murder Anderson has been reported — and disputed — before, Feldstein found new corroboration: A confession before his death by ex-White House “plumber” Howard Hunt."
It's hard to give the exact number of how many of these are Donny T's fault. But a lot of them. A New Study Says Nearly 6,000 Died In Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria. The Government Still Says 64 People Died.
Last night on MSNBC the reports were about Sessions being now an official witness against Trump in the matter of obstruction. And Trump cannot get out of it because he had publicly said he would not have hired Sessions had he known the AG would recuse himself from the Russia meddling/collusion matter. Moreover, Sessions himself cannot wiggle out of it either, since he would be under a bench order to come to court and explain away the convolutions of the Trump organized crime operations.
He is pissed because he wants someone else to take heat for firing Mueller. He knows (been told) what would transpire if he did. As usual, he's a coward.
Trump sounds more desperate each day. Rudy said he expects Impeachment. He admitted collusion and obstruction...and he's Trump's closest lawyer now? New York Times is reporting The Obstruction Case is much bigger than previously thought. Trump might have to escape to Israel and claim political asylum.
I've been thinking this for awhile. Slightly off topic, but related to Giuliani. So monday was Rudy's birthday. He wanted to celebrate by going to a Yankee's game in NYC. He gets to the stadium, and the announcer asks the crowd to wish Rudy a happy birthday. Turns out there were more boos than cheers.
So they acted swiftly on Roseanne Barr, let see if they act just as swiftly on Samantha Bee. Samantha Bee Slammed for Calling Ivanka Trump a 'Feckless C--t'
Let's see if you can figure out the difference between a personal insult and an insult that attacks an entire race.
So that's how you justify it as being acceptable? Calling someone a c*** is OK if it's one person. In that case you should have no objection to a person not a group being called a ni****?
I didn't say it was acceptable. But calling someone a bad name isn't in the same league as using racist epithets to degrade or dehumanize another race. 'News' like this reeks of trying desperately to change the topic.
Nobody created the news except the 2 people that made the inflammatory statements. Barr made comments about one person not an entire race on Twitter not live TV. And apologized for it and was cancelled. Let's see how it goes when someone can call someone else a c*** on live TV.
I think both comments are outrageous. A difference between the Barr comment and the Bee comment is that Bee is female. African-Americans can get away with using the "n' word, while for a white to use it is a big deal. Bar's comment attacked her target by suggesting that she was an ape by virtue of her being black. I don't buy the difference. I think the coarsening of our discourse is having a major impact on our sense of community, and that both women should suffer serious consequences. We have a President who is really no better in terms of sowing division by berating one person or group or another, with no apology. What should be done to him?
