Many, many good people over here, too. I certainly wouldn't want to condemn the Russian people for having an evil dictator, but he controls the Russian government. So I'll rephrase my post #59. Do you want to roll over for the Russian government, then, and let it mess with our elections? I think there's pretty substantial evidence that it did so, with the help of those dear Russian trolls and bots. I wouldn't call it "supposed" meddling, or call it an obsession to be concerned that it happened and could happen again in 2018 and 2020. But then you don't live here, and so your lack of concern is understandable. lol

No, I'm for continuing the investigation into Russian involvement as long as it's not used to justify more war.

Yeah I love Russian culture. They've just always gotten the short end of the stick as far as their government was concerned.

How does a socialist gain billions of bucks working in the government. I'd say he's quite the successful capitalist.

Actually, for the most time they were subjects to a tsar. Socialism was used in a failed attempt to end abominable governing, but they got lost in a power struggle and the country shifted into a dictatorial communist state.

Yeah that's usually how socialism goes.

    1. Change the government to socialism
    2. Celebrate freedom
    3. Economic turmoil begins
    4. 2 classes form: the oppressed and the oppressors
    5. Nationwide collapse
    6. "That wasn't real socialism, because it wasn't MY socialism"
    7. Rinse and repeat.

I think you know the answer. Yes there are some socialistic qualities to US laws.

But that doesn’t make the US a purely socialist society now, does it? Last I checked the Economic Freedom Index, we are the 16th most capitalistic country behind Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Chile, Denmark, the UK and more.

Socialism wreaked havoc on most of the Eurasian continent. The less socialism, the better.

We have social programs. Medicare, and SNAP or TANF. We're not stricly capitalist, are we? I'm under the impression that most governments are something of a hybrid between Capitalism and Socialism. I'll see if I can find some literature about it.

    EDIT: Found it.

As has been pointed out: the Russians have been under bad government for centuries, but only had socialism for max. half a century.

No, its how revolutions by (often centuries) oppressed people go, who finally see a chance to get rid of the elite in charge, but then have to figure the rest out themselves.

Other examples of that where you can't blame it on just socialism are plenty. In 18 and 19th century Europe, but also central America of course. Some countries even collapsed for a large part because of meddling of the land of the free (the excuse usually sounded honorable, the real reason was always economic)

So even though we have many socialist programs:
The military and defense, highways, public libraries, police, fire departments, Post Office, student loans, bridges and tunnels, trash removal, farm subsidies, the CIA, the FBI, healthcare, free vaccine development, the EPA, Social Security, museums, public schools, prison systems, parks, elected officials, CHIP, waste removal, water and electric lines and generation, medicare, medicaid, courts, the G.I. Bill, zoological parks, the IRS, lunch and breakfast programs, the FDA, the SSDI, corporate bailouts, unemployment insurance, public transportation, PBS, snow removal, the CDC, welfare, street lights, FEMA, public defenders, S-CHIP, Amtrak, NPR, Homeland Security, OSHA, USDA, scholarships, HHS, the census, Energy Department, Education Department, the Secrecy Service, the Peace Corp, DOJ, NWS, WIC..and I probably missed a few.

As all (or at least most) governments are not based on one political system alone, we apparently haven't reached the tipping point yet.

    LOL lets see

    1. Change the government to free market capitalism
    2. Celebrate freedom
    3. Economic turmoil begins (boom and bust, financial crashes, long recessions even depressions)
    4. 2 classes form: the oppressed and the oppressors (tax cuts, inequality)
    5. Nationwide turmoil
    6. Rise of lefties who sorts out problems (Keynesian type economics, better welfare, higher taxes, wealth distribution etc)
    7. Right begins to rise starts bringing free market capitalism in again

Let’s see 1920’s Gilded Age – boom and bust - depression – New Deal – rise of right from 1980’s – new gilded age – financial crash – Trump – so next should be rise of the left

You seem to assume that: (1) the index is a valid measure of economic freedom and (2) the opposite of economic freedom is (gasp) "socialism'. Those are the kinds of assumptions that make and ass of you and me.

Last time I checked the Economic Freedom Index, it was still being prepared by the conservative think tank, the Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal and funded by the Adolph Coors and the Koch Brothers, who also bankrolled the Tea Party. It has been called: "a piece of ideological punditry masquerading as academic research". Criticisms of the Index Of Economic Freedom As a business professor Charles W.L. Hill cautions: "given that the Heritage Foundation has a political agenda, its work should be viewed with caution.". The Index is not a measure of "socialism", but rather, as it says, "economic freedom" , i.e., neoliberalsim or its lack. The factors it uses in calculation the score are: corruption in government, barriers to international trade, income tax and corporate tax rates, government expenditures, rule of law, and the ability to enforce contracts, regulatory burdens, banking restrictions, labor regulations, and black market activities. All but the ignorant will recognize that several of these variables have nothing to do with socialism per se. This is the capitalists' view of freedom. The Trump Administration has just lowered one of the measures big time by his new tariff policy--maybe offset by the tax cuts for corporations and gazillionaires and his dismantling of environmental regulations. The libertarian Mises institute published a criticism of the particulars Index in an 2005 article by Stefan Karlsson. The Failings of the Economic Freedom Index | Stefan Karlsson Another critique, by the Foundation for Economic Education's Kevin Carlson, remarks :"The problem is that an index, ostensibly put forward as a general survey of economic freedom as such, is really a survey of economic freedom primarily as it affects the minority of the population that owns considerable amounts of capital and employs others".What Economic Freedom Indexes Leave Out | Kevin A. Carson For a statistical critique of the Index, see https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01178202/document See also Prove Me Wrong: The Bogus Freedom Index From Heritage

How "socialist" is the United States? We should start by counting the number of govermnent owned businesses, industries, farms, etc., since socialism involves State ownership of the means of production. The Index doesn't do that. So far, zero.

Socialism was a direct response to the conditions in Russia before the revolution. The country basically went from one extreme to the other

Insanity is trying socialism over and over again and expecting different results. Such as gulags not being built.

I admire the social welfare model of Scandinavian countries. They have what is called Democratic Socialism. It's not the same as what they're doing in the Russian Federation; at least I don't think so. They have a robust social welfare system that addresses the issue of poverty quite famously.

Guess what: Sweden is not socialist.

    Sweden has no minimum wage

The socialist utopia that is Sweden and Scandinavia is all an illusion.

    Because it isn't real socialism

I found their website. It says they used to be criticized for being socialist, but now they're considered capitalism done right.

How Sweden created a model economy

I haven't read the whole story, but I suspect they are democratic socialist.
