People spend an evening at the bar for many different reasons. Some want a few drinks and often include a meal, in a quiet atmosphere with some classical music playing in the background. Others want to watch sport on large screen televisions, while drinking beer from cans an making a lot of noise. Then their are rougher end snooker and darts bars, which mostly end up with guys vomiting on the floor and conducting discussions with their fists.
A bar owner needs to decide which of these types of customers he wants and stick to it, otherwise the business will soon fail.
The point that I made in my comment about the bar owner who I have known for many years, was that rather than have confrontation by stopping people at the door, he just let them feel uncomfortable when they realized that the atmosphere was not for them and then leave of their own accord.

I rather thought that the same applied to this site. It looks to me as if about 90% of new members disappear after posting a couple of sexually orientated messages and not interacting on any other subjects. I am surprised that so many people have needed banning, but I don't know how 3 million compares with the number of members who use the site, have just drifted away, or left after a couple of days. Am I correct in thinking that most of the 'banning' was in the first few years and before the site developed its identity.
