Sigmund's folly

“The demonological theory of those dark times has won in the end against all the somatic views of the period of ‘exact science.’ The states of possession correspond to our neuroses, for the explanation of which we once more have recourse to psychical powers.” - Freud
In the 80s I remember that anyone who abused a child was rightfully demonized. These days it seems like the abusers are not only much worse than ever, but that the frenzy for exposing them has subsided. Even the courts seem to be covering for them after decades of feeding them to the wolves in general population.
Today our society is fixated on witch-hunts against “micro-aggressions” (so slight the abuser is apparently unaware they are doing it), triggering (a few words thrown out that instantly transform the victim back to some prior trauma), sexual harassment (but only when men do it), and of course racism (a term that is redefined about every 4 years).
Attempts at psychoanalysis for the malfunctioned sexual life of adolescents and young adults, the low college graduation rate of men, and other alleged ills have transformed universities into controlled therapy centers, subjecting every aspect of life to probing control. Disguised as coddling and caring but delivering only platitudes and candy.
It seems more and more like “political correctness” is an oversimplification of Freuds theory. It presumes that the waking cognizance of ethnic, racial, and sexual minorities and indeed women is a fixed collection of traumatic experiences (or memories of the experiences of others that “could happen” to them).
Society (as controlled by government and media) seeks to prevent the triggering of these tender minds. So now, our public agencies, schools, colleges and even our entertainment have been converted into the functional equivalent of psychiatric rehab clinics as close as our ubiquitous phones. The charter is that all communications must be controlled and censored to minimize the potential for trauma.
Ultimately it seems like the goal of all of this is to stunt the development of people so they remain dependent on the state. A race of humanity that never grows up to realize its potential. Peter Pan gone mainstream. The REAL education will of course be delivered to the few who will become our masters. Never are we allowed to ask what happens if they are wrong lest we become demonized and ostracized.
