Side pocket or Corner pocket ?

When I was growing up, my family went to a colony of summer cottages. It was referred to as a bungalow colony. The homes were basically homes made of wood frames and clapboard exteriors. The flooring was linoleum. They were unheated structures (not suitable for winter months). Each unit had a water heater, at least one bedroom, a toilet with bath and shower, and a kitchen with cabinets, a refrigerator, sink, and propane stove/oven.
The colony had a swimming pool and a casino with a concession stand. There were tables upon which one could eat pizza or play cards. There was a pinball machine and a pool table. Pool cost 25ยข per game. I remember that there were different variations of the game; stripes and solids, calling, eight ball, or just random get as many balls into any pocket without getting the cue ball into a pocket.
The games sometimes seemed more magical than mathematical or scientific. One person had told me that she could determine where to strike the intended ball with the cue ball based on a spot of light that hit the ball from overhead. Others argue that it's the position in which the cue ball is struck itself that makes the difference (hit the ball with the stick in the middle, the top, or the bottom). Of course, the force used to strike the ball makes a difference; one needed have a degree in physics to understand that concept. And still, there were some who'd argue that the skill is all in how the cue stick is handled, how the body is positioned, and what choice is made for fingering on the non-dominant hand around stick.
Me? I used to just like to announce which pocket I was aiming for. I'd never say the name of the ball. And, for the most part, it was always the corner pocket. After all, there were four corners and only two sides. Odds were against the side pockets two to one.
I usually spent the day eating a slice of pizza and playing solitaire. Pool never captured my interest.
