    So Barzani resigns, saying "nobody stood up with us other than our mountains", likely referring to the old expression that Kurds have no friends but the mountains.

    From what I read, most Kurds did not support him or his ideas. The Kurdish government voted to stay with Iraq. The referendum was illegal under Iraqi law, and international law. There are more Kurds in Turkey and in Iran. Barzani wanted to Kick Iraq when it is weak after attacks by ISIS. Now Barzani is out of a job. Abadi showed him who the boss man in Iraq happens to be these days.

    Probably the most reasonable thing atm.
    The last thing the region needs is another (likely armed) conflict.
