I hate the sentiment of "the one who got away." I find it particularly sad, for whatever reason. Especially when folks are still remembering things from years and years ago. "For all sad words of tongue and pen, the saddest are these: "it might have been."" Some truth to that.
Keats has a more optimistic twist on it: "Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on" "Bold lover, never, never canst thou kiss, Though winning near the goal – yet, do not grieve: She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss, For ever wilt thou love, and she be fair!"
