I was trying to read, and she and her friend were near me in the library, talking rather loudly. When I politely asked if they were going to talk very long, her friend was nice about it, and the arrogant woman seemed to make a point of not missing a second of talking to her friend, as if I were not there. But, that's not the big point. It's what I heard the arrogant woman talking about.

The religious K-12 school her family uses. The one attached to a patriarchal religion. The one that has sought taxpayer funding of its schools for over 100 years. The one that cheers Trump on as his appointee to oversee family planning is an opponent of not just abortion but all birth control (Manning). In the woman's rude level of volume, and the way she barely paused her conversation, I saw the conservative arrogance ruining the country.

I want to humiliate such people at the polls, in 2018, and 2020. (November 6, next year) The notion I would abstain from voting because I might not get precisely the candidate I want is absurd. Politics is about compromise. As long as there are Democratic Party candidates that will make that arrogant woman squirm in her seat, I'm voting.

Catholic schools in my region already get funding in the form of free bus service provided by the public district they reside in and free access to the local sports facilities.

They also get funds for textbooks, materials, equipment, line items and special ed.

They can also apply for grants to be applied toward enrollment.

Decades ago, someone wrote a book about "Parochaid". School bus subsidies were gained with pleas for sympathy for safety needs of the kids. I'm serious. Buses were claimed to be needed so Catholic kids could get to and from school safely.

That was in the day when America was largely Protestant, and no one dreamed the taxpayer would be required to supply all the needs of the Catholic schools. The Catholic lobby has worked long and hard to get what they now have. Charter schools. Vouchers. We must be more organized.

Anyway. I just found this in today's news about Trump, and how he wants any and all employers to be able to deny coverage for birth control: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/birth-control-contraception-trump_us_592ed9e7e4b0e09b11ec93c7?bb&ncid=inblnkushpmg00000009

    No.

If your employer provides insurance coverage for you as part of your pay, they can deny the insurance company the right to cover your contraceptives based solely on the employer's religious views.

You have no right to exercise your religious views, or lack thereof, in regards to your health coverage.

Well yes, and Jewish students receive bus transportation also.

As far as Charter Schools go; they are drawing away paying students from Catholic schools as well as public school students.

NJ Senator Corey Booker supported Charters when he was Mayor of NJ's largest city.

Jefferson wrote that no one should be forced to pay for a religion they disagree with, and Benjamin Franklin said that good faiths do not need government support to survive, as bad faiths do.

I think an influx of Irish Catholics into the country was the first instance of economic refugees coming here with no intent on accepting some of America's values. What has the leadership of the Catholic Church ever cared about separation of church and state?

That some Jewish schools get subsidies is wrong, too. Now, it'll be a matter of time until cults get tax support for their brainwashing of K-12 students. Gays, atheists, women, will all be paying for their own defamation.

I'm not sure how you meant the above, but I must point out that you live in a country that gives tax support to religious groups. The US was the first nation to separate church and state. Wouldn't you rather live where religious groups get no government aid? Where people do not tell the government which church they want their taxes given to?

You're voting out of spite against arrogant women?

Let me know how that works for you.

That's not exactly what he said. But i agree with this most:

People who can but choose not to vote are the real rapists of democracy.
If one cares a lot about such issues it may be worthwile for that person to let it weigh in the decision.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but that part really sounds like he's voting for party over candidates to stick it to other people.

    That's how we got Trump.

Yeps, that's how it sounds and yes that's how America gets fucked. But for Eleven it is of course about the issue of certain groups/organisations getting government funding for the wrong reasons. If that wasn't the issue he would not vote against the party that would favor the ideas of said arrogant woman or have made this thread ;)

People who don't vote are indeed the rapists of democracy. Distill the phenomenon and one sees that they are simply apathetic.

I hate arrogant stupid people and I'm getting less tolerant of them as I'm getting older, last year I was sat in the beer garden at my local pub, it has one section specifically for people who smoke, this is clearly indicated by a large sign, ' smoking section'. So there I was enjoying a pint and a bit of sunlight when these two women rock up, one of them points to the table next to mine, "hey lets sit here, its nice and sunny" she tells her friend, so they sit down. Not five minutes later the stupid bint is moaning about people smoking and how wrong it is that they should smoke where she is, I lost it completely and pointed to the sign, "smokers don't bother me love, what really pisses me off is people who are too thick to read signs" I snarled, they left! lol

If Eleven is voting purely to spite a woman who annoyed him in the library, that would seem frivolous, and we might quibble about the political correctness of using the word "rapist" to describe non-voters. But I think he's making a more important point that I agree with. Not voting, at least at this critical juncture of history, is an abandonment of civic responsibility that can have serious consequences for the future of this country. Abortion and separation of church and state are just two of the major issues on which the candidates differ, but they are a big draw for evangelical and Catholic voters who seem to be willing to overlook Trump's unchristian behavior in order to keep those right wing judges coming in the federal judiciary. My sister dislikes Trump as much as I do, but she's Catholic and couldn't bring herself to vote for a candidate who didn't oppose abortion, so she ended up throwing her vote away on some nonsense protest candidate. If enough people do that this time, we're in for another four years of the Donald, and that may be enough to give our Constitution the coup de grace. There was a time when George Wallace's charge of "not a dimes worth of difference" between the two parties had some merit, but since Reagan those days are long past. I know disgruntled Bernie fans who think that if socialism isn't on the menu, it's not worth bothering with. It's your right as an American to feel that way, but it isn't right--cuz what little social democracy we have is being steadily eroded with the Republicans in office. This country has never been so polarized, and its a result of a deliberate effort on the part of the Prez and his gang to divide and conquer. He needs to go, not only to piss the arrogant lady and those like her off, but to protect our democracy against further erosion.

Speaking of arrogance, I find those assholes showing up armed to legislative assemblies and hanging governors in effigy because their "rights" to defy social distancing and to bear uzis are being interfered with are pushing it. We need leaders who put them in their place.

The leading case was Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. (2014) which began right here in Oklahoma. A private corporation successfully won the right not to have its insurance cover abortions, if the company is "closely held" (owned by five or fewer people). Trump seems to be trying to loosen that limit and broaden its scop. Shopping at Hobby Lobby is a religious experience. They have Christian music constantly playing in the background, and I find myself whistling "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" as I walk to my car! Where I live, Hobby Lobby is directly across the parking lot from Chick Fil-A, and people crossing between the two have been known to be raptured, never to be seen again. Gotta be careful.
