The world's quickest camera shutter allows you to see how the light running.

The test scenario: a beam of laser pulse enters the bottle from the left, and high-speed camera shutter records the movement of the laser in the water bottle.

So what other modern technologies you guys have heard about?

Thats about 4 years old, nothing really seemed to have come from the tech since then, despite all the usual claims from MIT, and claims it would change the world in the scientific media

UltraRope is 80% lighter than standard cable with no loss of strength.
    Elevators could reach 3,280 feet.

^...... Now If Everybody Just Took The Stairs Instead...... We Wouldn't Have Overweight Peeps And

This New Technology Would Become Obsolete Over Night.......[IMG]

I'm going to sound like a grumpy old bastard

But what things are actually better with modern technology?

Cars are shit nowadays, they all look the same....any of them more fun than hooning around in a V8 from 30 years ago.

Cell phones are handy, but Facebook and Twitter arent THAT great, still just mostly text and photos

I have been seeing these dumd stories in the media for decades now, some nerd just invented some dumb shit, its going to change the world, space stations will have super tethers, you'll just be able to take an elevator to space. Robots will be able to tie your shoelaces for you, because thats such a big ordeal.

Another bunch of nerds have invented some super dooper chip that will make you computer run 10 times faster, even though you only use your computer for typing ascii text and watching Game of Thrones or porn.

In 5 years all transactions will be in bitcoins, that was ten years ago

Scientists have found another 50 earth like planets, and by earth like they mean twice the size with 1/4 of the gravity and then have no idea if they have an atmosphere, because they only know they are there by the way the solar system they are in bends light in the background, whilst at the same time they can even get a replacement for the space shuttles, so we are like a million years away from having the tech to get there

Once you get past 8 MP, what do you need a better camera in your phone for? WTF do you need a 25 MP camera for, close ups of your zits, they've run out of shit to put in cell phones that makes them the next must have version

What the fuck do I need a robot vacuum cleaner for?

why the bloody hell do I need an app that lets me switch on my kettle 5 mins before i get home

some things about modern technology are good, but they aint that frickin great, And "experts" still dont know shit about anything

    Rant over

All kinds of good stuff today.

Cars are vastly superior. In the old days at least twice a year, they needed new plugs, points, condenser, and timing. Tires went flat, belts stretched and broke, lights quit, upholstery fell apart, alternators, starters, brakes, water pumps, heater hoses, windshield wipers, and shocks failed. Springs broke, fenders rusted, and they lacked seat belts and padded dashes.

    Power tools are fantastic today.
    Microwave ovens are great.
TV and video systems are excellent. TV's used to fail all the time. There were even people who did nothing but fix TVs...in your home.

    I could go on.

I too sometimes question the value of modern tech on our health and fitness.

But I must opine that I think you are dead wrong about cars today being "shit."

While true they do not usually have the unique styles and imagination insofar as body design is concerned, they are far far more efficient and safe.

ABS breaks, airbags, improved steering suspension systems, back-up cameras, superior frame design, have all saved tens of thousands of lives over the past three decades or so.

And they're faster. I know some of the old school muscle car afacianados would be loathe to admit, but what I am about to claim is true. Take it from a speed junkie and longtime gear head......

An average, non-high performance car of today will usually beat in the 1/4 mile and in 0-60 races, a muscle car of, say, the late 60s early 70s. I'm talking a stock muscle car, of course.

So, say....a 2016 Chevy Malibu, or Dodge Dart (four banger!) or Toyota Camry, will crush a 1971 Dodge Charger in any speed test. And of course is far superior in cornering and handling and safety and fuel economy.

Even four-bangers today are squeezing out close to 200 horsepower!!

When was the last time you actually drove an old car? If you have, you'd know what I speak of. They fell like land yacht. Sluggish, shite in the corners, breaks that can lock up on a slick road and send you into an uncontrolled slide. Steel dashboards added into this mix, with no airbags; frames that are NOT designed to crumple in the right places on impact, and they're pretty much death traps in today's world.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers.

Yes today's car are much faster, but you're off with your quarter time speeds.

    2016 Malibu: 16.5 seconds at 84.6 mph

    1966 COBRA 427: 12.20 @ 118
    1969 ROAD RUNNER 440 SIX PACK: 12.91 @ 111.8
    1970 HEMI 'CUDA: 13.10 @ 107
    Etc.

But since we're on cars how about the new Dodge Demon?

The internet is great. Could do without the porn. I think it should be regulated so you have to get permission from your provider to download it, and have to pay for it with a credit card. It's just too easy for kids to access imo.

As far as other tech goes I'm really into music technology. Digital Audio Workstations can do amazing things now.

Also movie cameras that anyone can afford. I will be looking into animation software soon. Just to mess around with. I'm not a professional.

They have saved tens of thousands of lives over the last couple decades?

Why do you assume this to be true?

Worldwide, number of road fatalities per capita over the last 50 years, go do your own research, the truth may suprise you

I also should add the glaring fact that today's cars last twice as long. Or longer, than those supposed classics.

And, that Malibu time for the quarter is bullshit! My wife has one. I've jumped on that thing several times and timed it myself in the quarter. I did just under 15 flat. I did 0-60 in 5.2.

Disappointing to see a car publication get this wrong. What nitwit was driving that thing? LOL

In fact......I now wonder if there is just ONE aspect of older cars that is superior? Other than, as mentioned, the highly subjective and totally non proveable area of style and looks?

And the fact that a shade tree mechanic could work on older cars. Those days are gone. But is that objectively a superior point for older cars? Just because the newer ones have computers and chips and require a diagnostic machine? When something is said to be superior, as are newer cars compared to old, it is the quality which must be measured.

And in quality, in any measurable area, older cars simply are outmatched by today's autos.

It's one of those cold, hard, but slightly sad truths! LOL

    Cheers.

Who cares about fast cars though? It's not like 98% of the goons that buy them actually know how to drive them to their ability, so they end up with speeding fines and killing civilians in other vehicles.

I'm pretty up front with street racing and my thoughts so, faster cars etc. all fluff to me, pointless fluff but ay, gets some dudes dicks hard I suppose.

I can safely say, I wouldn't be able to see if it wasn't for modern technology and medicine at least.

You know I had my corneas cut out and sewn in which sounds drastic but if I had been born 4 years later they'd have just sewn a washer into my eye and be done with it, that's how they counteract that disease now, but I had to have new corneas and refractive laser eye surgeries etc.

Hell, 50 years ago it would have been "sorry dunno what we can do for you, you'll never see properly again"

Now I'm wearing a 1300€ contact lens pin point accurately fits every blemish of my new corneal transplant. Without it, I can't see anything can't even read the runes on my ring. With it, almost perfect. :)

Even just looking at the US, where more people can afford safer cares and the infrastructure is a whole lot better, the improvements in road fatalities isnt that great.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_motor_vehicle_deaths_in_U.S._by_year#/media/File%3AU.S._traffic_deaths_as_fraction_of_total_population_1900-2010.png

Expand that to the rest of the world and you know what you are going to find, even with mass production air bags arent free they add about $2K to the cost of the vehicle, every extra $1000 cuts out a certain percentage of the population that can afford them. So they all ride around on motorcycles instead, China, India, Africa, it means more road deaths. More dodgy trucks and buses on the road with rich people in their suvs driving faster becuase they are safe

As for one aspect of older cars being superior, they look and sound better.

Give me a GT over a lexus any day.

And if you need a reverse camera to reverse park, you are a big pussy

I like my reverse camera. :)
Before that if I had to fit into a space nope I'd walk 5km before I'd attempt that. :D now with my big truck it's like, got a camera so I'm more confident with reverse parking. :) :)
