You can still upgrade to Windows 10 with the following link:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade

I've been going through some second hand Motherboards with embedded windows keys. Problem is, I have no idea what version Windows keys are in the BIOS, if windows 8 or 10 or home or premium. Pain in the ass but anyway, the ones that turn out to have Windows 8, I've been using the link above to upgrade them Windows 10.

Cheap parts boards that I acquired from various systems, mostly Acer Aspires, with minor issues. I'm setting up an Asus H81M board right now with an i5, had a couple bent pins.

Funny tidbit, the link doesn't seem to work by default in Win 8 Internet Explorer, need to use Chrome to download the upgrade file.

    There is only one Windows.

Do yourself a favour. Get yourself an investment for the grandchildren, and frame the thing as a testament to real computing.

Stay with whatever you can until you absolutely have no other choice but to upgrade to Windows 10.. that (P.)O.S. is the sign of end times for 'Personal Computing'.

Windows XP was my favorite OS but you do have to go with the flow if you want to run anything recent. Can't play GTA5 or CEMU Zelda BOTW on Windows XP.

I hear you, plus it's dangerous to use online without current support. But, as an inheritance gift to pass on through the generations, I think it holds it's weight in platinum.
However, for nostalgia's sake for an offline system; look into Windows XP: Black Edition. Shouldn't have any problems running recent games either.

^ There are systems with embedded OS, but these boards just have embedded keys. Instead of a big sticker with a 25 character authentication key, these computers will just have a tiny "Windows 8" logo sticker. The authentication Key is saved in the BIOS and activated automatically when installing from a UEFI mode Windows disk. Provided that you have downloaded and burned the proper Windows version disk. There are different programs that will let you view your BIOS key if your computer has one, like "ShowkeyPlus".

I think that once you upgrade a Win 8 computer to Win 10, Microsoft will save your key info as compatible for both 8 and 10 if you do a fresh install again in the future. I've had motherboards with Windows 8 BIOS keys that installed and activated directly from a Windows 10 disk, and others need a Windows 8 disk. I'm pretty sure it's because they've already been upgraded to 10 in the past.

Just got my Linux desktop, so I'm saving or deleting my saved stuff in my Windows 10 "Bill Gates Moneytrap".

Like my salesman said, "switching over to the dark side, huh!"

Hmmm, that statement would only be valid if Bill actually had anything to do with the development of windows 10.
he is no longer at the helm or involved that much in developing the software and hasn't been for years.

So he's still not raking in the money every time he decides we "must" upgrade to the "new and improved product", right now!? Really...
Who is the new moneyman then?

Gates hasn't been at the helm for over a decade and doesn't really decide any of that shit anymore. Gates stepped down as CEO, Balmer taking the position as CEO in 2000. He then quit his position as chief software developer in 2006.
Balmer retired and was replaced by Satya Nadella in 2014. Nadella is now calling most of the shots, not Gates.

Of course Gates still makes an income from MS, but that isn't his only source of income, plus he does donate a considerable amount to humanitarian projects and philanthropic ventures which have consumed most of his time for years now.
Instead of juvenile jealous whining about how wealthy he is why not consider how many lives he has saved simply by purchasing mosquito nets for people?

Microsoft hasn't gotten a damn cent from me for decades. The last time I, and only time that I ever bought a new PC was back in 94. I literally have dozens of legitimate windows keys from salvaged and second hand rebuilt desktops and laptops. I hate monopolizing corporations more than anyone and I wouldn't be using Windows 10 if I could not disable and uninstall all bloatware crap they push on start menu. Yes, it is super annoying to uninstall and disable two dozen tile apps, and hide cortana, and uninstall OneDrive, and Skype, and Sports, and news, and facebook... Windows 10 does not FORCE me to use Bing or IE or Windows Media player or Microsoft store. I can uninstall all that shit and install Chrome, and firefox, and Kodi Media Center... and just about any PC game I want. That's not too bad for an OS that I got for free two dozen times over. Why wouldn't I use Windows 10 on PC hardware that has a free license?

These last few months have made me COMPLETELY REGRET installing Windows 10 on my computers!!

Nuisance forced updates on every computer, even on Win 10 Pro with with update service disabled and metered wifi settings. One laptop had a failed loop, constant update nag for over a month before I gave up and had to wipe the drive and fresh install windows to clear the update/failed update nags. Every major update re-installs all of Microsoft's bullshit bloat crap-ware, dozens of shit app tiles, re-installs OneDrive... This last one REALLY fucking pissed me off, reset all browsers, reset file explore views, made Edge default, erased my fucking Chrome bookmarks and everything!! Dirty rotten unprofessional piece of utter fucking shit!! Fuck windows 10 to fucking hell!!!!!!!!!!!!

Microsoft is making the transition to AI, virtual reality, and analog operating systems, and many are assuming they'll be lucky to get even the basics right by windows 12. Its a bit like asking Pee Wee Herman to dance like Fred Astaire.

Lost my games saves too, so I have no reason to keep this piece of shit OS on my gaming PC. I'm going to try a stripped minimal Win 7 ISO. There are also minimal Win 10 ISO's but with windows updates, I think they will just re-install all the stripped out shit anyway.

    I still might try it, I donno, Windows 10 Super Minimal;
