Not technically from Manchester, but influential in Manchester, in a big way.
Formed in Bolton in 1976 around Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley, Buzzcocks were pioneers of punk in Manchester, putting on gigs and inviting the Sex Pistols to perform in the city for the first time. Their debut EP, Spiral Scratch, was self-produced on their own label and inspired countless other band to join the DIY indie scene. Devoto left early on to form Magazine, but the band continued, enjoying chart success with tracks like Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've).

Saw The Buzzcocks play the Cathouse in Glasgow in 1993, mate's band called $U$ were supporting them. A punk band from Glasgow that didn't go very far but were still a great band. The guitarist (from the Buzzcocks) started fighting with someone in the crowd half way through the gig.

Again -
I started the thread because as I live in (albeit on the Southern side of) the City, being in the City; both at the time and the days thereafter, interacting with/and seeing the Spirit and diversity of the people - different backgrounds and tastes - it got me to thinking that it was one way of reminding people that Manchester = "A City United" was to acknowledge the various musical acts that have/ appeal to many - Music crosses many boundaries - and I felt it appropriate
It's a UK and Music topic and therefore applicable to both
I don't see what the issue is - if you don't feel it appropriate - then please feel free not to engage - and post :)
- I hope that's answered your question(?)

I just learned that the Chemical Brothers are from Manchester. So, here they are with "Where Do I Begin".

Ah - Castlefield = A nice little open air Arena (those steps can be a bit dodgy sometimes mind) and being in a bowl can produce a Communal spirit of musical unity (for me anyway)

I don't know if it's the same as it was in 1997 as it is now. It was just like a car park by the canal or something, near Barca. Didn't even know 808 State were playing until they came on.

It's ok - (see initial post) Bolton, is part of 'Greater' Manchester
"Ever fallen .." is probably my fave Buzzcocks - but was initially draw through this track
