This may sound a bit abstract, but what it means is they have found the last piece of the puzzle to producing optical computers with speeds eventually in excess of a million times faster than anything today. Being able to combine electronic circuitry any way you want means you can give it as many inputs and outputs as you want, but a single optical cpu would be fast enough to replace every cpu, graphics card, and server on the planet. MIT has already come out with one tiny optical cpu that uses a mere 3 watts to process a hundred to a thousand times faster than any commercial chip on the planet and can send a signal six feet over a fiber optic. With improvements, these are the kinds of chips that could easily end up rewiring the entire planet, every car, every house, everything.

Optical is simply the way to go even for transmitting power to a house or wirelessly to your cellphone, and we've had the technology to break up a beam into an arbitrary number of beams and multiplex the bunch the way an electrical phone cable does, but picking out the one signal you want on the other end is about the only remaining obstacle to rewiring all of communications and power systems on the planet for much greater speed and efficiency and even quantum cryptography purposes to ensure privacy and bring order to the chaos that is the internet. With increased speeds and capacities in general the next generation push to develop Ai should take off like a rocket-ship or down the nearest rabbit hole or toilet of your personal preference.
