I guess I can tell you all. I am 48 now. And I am not a young man anymore, I realize.

But as of late, maybe the past couple years or so, I have really been slowing down a lot. More so than ever before, possibly. And my attention span, is not what it used to be.

I did go to my neurologist. And he did a full exam. He scanned me. He gave me an EEG and an MRI. He prodded and poked me, to be sure. And he told me he found nothing out-of-the-ordinary. At least that his tests could show.

I should also tell you, I have been drinking alcohol basically all my life. We always had it around the house. And even as a child, I wouldn't hesitate to pour myself a drink. I became drunk for the first time at age 18. Then after that, I would occasionally become drunk again.

As of late, I have made sure I only drink once a week (today, as fate would have it). But I never drive after I drink. In fact I give myself a good 48 hours, just to make sure it is all out of my system. I do have several drinks, though, I guess I can tell you. I told the neurologist this too. And he didn't seem to think too much of it.

Do any of the rest of you have any pieces of advice?

Thank you all in advance for your kind and helpful words :).

Do you think it might be just motivation?

Are you happy with your lot?

    Are you eating well?

Might you benefit from a tonic? People laugh at that, but it's true, sometimes you lack vitamins etc!

Do you seem hot, and sweat more than you used to? Could be your losing your salts!

    Rehydration is so important!

Do you have enough motivation? Do you go out with friends much?

Do you feel sad more than you used to..? Down?

I'm also 48. I have had less than four bottles of wine worth of alcohol in my life, but I made up for it with psychedelics.
I've never smoked, use edibles as sleep and pain aids.

Go beyond the neurologist. See an endocrinologist about testosterone levels, perhaps.
    Andropause is real, and treatable.
Sometimes just with activity and diet, so that's cheap.

But seriously, lots of small snack size meals over the course of the day and night, not the three large meals you've been trained to do, as it takes more energy to digest and your organs find it harder to cope

And pretty much anything you like is going to kill you quicker - coffee, bacon, cheese, booze

So dont have any fun anymore and you might squeeze in an extra 2 or 3 years.....but at the end when you cant really move out of bed or remember you own name

Of course the best way for him to not have any fun anymore is to get married if he isnt already

I threw that one in just for you, as I know you love that ;)

Then she can take all his stuff and live 30 years longer

Well, I've been slowing down too. I'm only thirty-seven though. I don't feel as interested in the gym. I remember when I used to drink, though, I felt much heavier! It was a weight thing for me. That's not why I stopped though. There were ultimatums about my drinking but ultimately I had to stop because the medication I was on didn't agree with alcohol. Anywho..

I think it sounds like maybe you're thinking about stopping drinking. It's been a long time with the alcohol though, so maybe not an easy thing to do. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. It might be your diet as well. What are you eating? :)

how does one not drive for 48 straight hours every week?

alcohol metabolizes at (very roughly) an hour and a half per drink. so after 48 hours you would have gotten about 36 beers out of your system. i think you could relax those driving restrictions just a tad, unless you are really partying hard that one night per week.
