Some say the nuclear winters from a just a few blasts would wipe out the human race as well as countless wildlife species. They say the only humans who might survive are down in the Southern Hemisphere

IMO, I think that society in general is apathetic over many things - until the topic strikes someone personally, no one cares. Maybe that's human nature, Idk. But, the threat of nuclear war doesn't resonate because of apathy, I think.

First let me state that plenty of people are worried about nuclear war
but by your knowledge in this sentence specifically
it seems the people you are around are probably uneducated and don't worry about it.
    good luck with life.

famine and disease will do for us, if we don't stop worshiping the automobile and the fossil fuel industry,
with or without the use of nuclear weapons in armed conflict.

we really need to get our heads out of that dark stinky place and stop hating logic,
if we want to avoid the extinction of the species we call human.

i do believe sapience will re-emerge in some form. the fur shall inherit the earth.

but i still believe we have a choice and don't have to throw it all away.

even if it is too late to prevent all deep loses.

there are environmental tipping points we have already passed,
but if we wake up and smarten up, we can still reduce extremely probable losses.

so yeah, nuclear war, still very bad news,
just not the biggest nor most likely threat we have to face.

    I think its probably inevitable

Someone from some country isnt going to fuck up some time in the next 500 years?

In 100 years we will probably have something far worse than nuclear weapons

At least we dont have a single weapon that can blow up the whole planet......yet

Well, except for the large hadron collider

we have something far worse right now. its called the environment.
lovers of the fossil fuel industry and generally haters of logic,
want to stir up wars and fear of wars, to distract people from thinking about,
what they have going for themselves at the expense of everyone and every thing else.

sure war is always a real potential threat.
and when two of them can make and excuse to play with their boom boom military toys,
    yup, it could happen.

but really, loss of environment is a bigger and more immediate threat to the loss of all life,
even if tossing nukes back and forth wipes a really big chunk of it too.

as for wiping out a planet entirely, there's a couple of ways to do that,
that don't even really require, powerful weapons as such, at all.

the more obvious is a to accellerate a sufficient mass to a high delta v, on the appropriate trajectory.
    any sufficient mass will do.

another would be to unblance the masses withing the core, cause the planet to fly apart.

of course nothing human has either of these capabilities at present.

but human attitudes being what they so often are, it might seem for the rest of the universe expedient,
    to take such actions pre-emptively.

It's kind of like worrying about a fatal car crash or terminal disease. It would be game over anyway. I live 3 miles away from one of the largest air force bases on the west coast so I would most likely be at the epicenter of a blast.

Interesting. With the exception of Australia, it's like the Southern Hemisphere just doesn't...care. "Yeah, you guys go ahead and blow yourselves up. We'll rebuild civilization."
