It often seems to me that right wing supporters go with their gut rather than their heads. They can be shown the shit, and it can be explained what might happen when the shit is thrown but they don’t want to believe anything could be wrong right up till the shit actually hits the fan.

I remember the supporters of Bush jr and his mainly neo-con lead administration the opponents (mostly from the left but some from the right) gave the warnings but the support only began to waned slowly it was only when the fuck ups became so obvious that the once very vocal followers became silent.

(And I the trouble is I think even then many continue to be supportive of right wing ideas they just stopped been vocal about it).

This means that Trumps supporters are going to continue to give him support until things are so bad that even they can’t deny things have gone to shit.

Is like the boiling frog story they will let things slid and the rising heat until they are at boiling point.

The question is how do we that are warning about stuff get through to these people a bit sooner so that the shit doesn’t hit the fan and the mess might be too great to clean up?

I agree that many are going with their gut rather than thinking it through and trying to find a viable solution.

I think that immigration is a complex issue. I think that morally we're obligated to allow immigration into the United States by all cultures. But the new policy is intended to make America safer. More legitimate? I don't know. I think that immigrants stand to gain a lot by coming to this country though. And this policy claims to allow immigration, while implementing "extreme vetting" for those from countries effected by terrorism. Shouldn't the vetting be across the board to avoid discriminating against certain peoples? I think so. But we're not only talking about immigration...

As far as ignoring the warnings, I'm not sure what you mean. I read this morning that many mayors from so-called sanctuary cities are vowing to remain a sanctuary for immigrants. They will lose funding as a result. The President knows that he won't have their support the next time there is an election, but I don't think that will stop him for even a second.

I think that these radical policies (I use the term radical for lack of a better word) will set a dangerous precedent though.

I see little chance that anyone can. Probably, all this is going to have to be played out before any change will occur. We can only hope that the damage will not be so great as to be terminal.

May is flying off to meet the abomination today. My guess is she'll roll over and play little doggie. She seems completely out of her depth. That's not going to help at all. I hope this country isn't going to align itself with him, but I fear the tories will do just that.

I see absolutely no evidence that his supporters have a lick of common sense...or that they think he is doing anything that is not fine fine fine.

    smh

Remember when he said he could kill someone in public (in Time Square I think he said) and nobody would do anything - I'm afraid that is just how foolish people have become over him.

If I live to be 1000 yrs old I will never understand this. As far as I can see, these same people that continue to stand in support of him would be the same people that were able to follow Hitler and live with themselves as they took the Jews to the camps.

Maybe if the warning is visualised as a pile of shit and thrown in their faces they might acknowledge something's off.

I see the same thing with left wing supporters.
    As for the title.
Trump supporters will just see him as doing what he said he was going to do as long as he keeps signing those executive actions.

Actions and policies have outcomes, cause and effect, US foreign policy and actions in the Middle East have directly resulted in what is happening there today.

I remember when many opposed to the invasion of Iraq accusing the Bush Admin for going into the war to get the oil and this been very strongly denied by Bush supporter it was all about making the world safer and liberating the Iraqi people but now Trump is saying he would have taken the oil and hinting he would again if given a chance – and his supporters seem in agreement.

Thing is that anti-American feeling that often resulted in the insurgency and terrorism against US occupation and lead to ISIS was in part fuelled by the belief Americans were there not to help the Iraqi’s but to ‘rape’ their country.

I can imagine ISIS and others spreading video’s of what Trump said at the CIA and rubbing their hands in glee.

Thank you Pen, in a way that’s my point for example Bush and the neo-con had a huge amount of support for invading Iraq but that support seem to come from the gut rather the head and it was based in large part down to lies and misdirection, many believing Saddam was working with al Queada and that he had huge stockpiles of WMD’s. This meant that they ignored or shouted down those pointing out the facts and warnings about the dangers.

I had a conversation with a trump supporter. This person said that trump can do whatever he wants as long as he gets rid of the Mexicans, and Muslims.

Here is the thing though. Trump supporters are not looking at the big picture.
    To paraphrase the anecdote,
First they came for the Mexicans, and no one did anything
Then they came for the Muslims, and no one did any thing
And then they came for you. . . .

A recent study discovered that anybody can easily made to question even the most simple facts, such as Walt Disney created the character of Mickey Mouse, by merely providing them with conflicting evidence, however, when conservatives were presented with conflicting political evidence they dug in with their heals and refused to budge an inch. Hence, the reason forty years of surveys have consistently indicated that one in five Americans insists the sun revolves around the earth. You might as well ask if sow's ear can be turned into a silk purse.

Don't be so pessimistic. Already a majority of Americans, according to the polls, have an unfavorable opinion of Trump, and he's in what is usually a President's "honeymoon" period. The stock market continues to rise in anticipation of all that deregulation that's expected to happen. I expect that to end soon. The stock market is overvalued and due for a correction. Congress hasn't made its assault on the major social programs yet.--Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. Social Security used to be called the "Third Rail" of American politics. Any politician even suspected of wanting to mess with it would be destined for extinction, but I don't think Paul Ryan and the Congressional Republicans can resist. Meanwhile, we should be gathering up our rain gear and preparing for a lot of shit. But the hard core Trumpsters may be with us till the bitter end. Even at the peak of the Watergate hearings, Nixon had his 25%. I have lots of friends who are Trump supporters, and they're relatively impervious to facts and arguments. They pride themselves in not watching the news, cuz "it's all biased". When I have them over and the conversation turns political, they go to sleep. So I've made a rule: no talk about politics, cuz I lose 40% of my guests!
Until the power grid goes so they can't watch football, or the terrorists bomb the breweries, these guys are in it for the duration!

I do see it in the general population, not just with conservatives. Obama bombed 7 countries while in office but most of his supporters arent going to acknowledge anything like that or give it much thought.

But I do find it concerning how Trump voters will gladly twist facts or accept "alternate" facts in order to suit their paradigm. Anyone not willing to have their preconceived notions challenged is dangerous.

Yes....rule was always no talk of religion or politics with people....and I don't have these discussions with people in real life...If they start, I have to make excuses to go do something else or I change the subject or something....if what they are saying is not what i agree with.....Friendships and things can turn ugly really fast....as we have experienced on this forum....unfortuneatley.

Someone at my neighbor's this Christmas started with how great trump is at the dinner table. I wanted to leave, but just sat there and had to take it.......and it kind of ruined the dinner for me.....as it was torture.. They went on and on, too.

I finally just started having my own conversation with my daughter's neighbor....about animal rights and her going to Florida and things to save little dogs thrown in the swamps...We connect that way...so that saved the night for me. She is a very caring person.

The pessimism is that Trump is already moving forward on isolating the US from Mexico, with China next on his agenda. He has isolated himself from both the republicans and democrats and these are the only remaining cards he has to play. There's just no way he can palm himself off as advocating women and children, the poor, or anyone else for that matter unless he can produce results and he is moving fast attempting to deal with the backlash of his Russian backed election. Forget about a stock market correction, the direction he is taking us is towards war and economic collapse with California and others already insisting on seceding from the union because there is just no way any politician can survive attempting to deport every illegal alien in the state.

As I understood China is making a lot of good (for them) trading allignments with other countries atm. Japan will be a bigger victim economically because of Trumps policies to bring jobs back. Besides, a lot of the jobs that went originally to China had already shifted to other countries (like India).

LOL! That so describes something I would go through!! Especially in the midst of these people, in this state.

I think if is nothing short of bizarre that I was/am lucky enough to be raised by someone that isn't like "all those around them"...

Now that I am grown, I recall hearing Mama proudly say "I'm a Democrat." Hell, she's not an imbecile...she had to know what she was doing, what she was announcing in this place. But damn if I know....DID she realize what she was telling them??.

Anyway...life proceeded, and I'm glad for the goals and rules and yes, laws, that hold everything together. These very same things I so value, with this presidency, and all of these crazed vocal people supporting him, are going against all I hold sacred and important...they make me very very uneasy.

    I don't feel as secure...idk

China would seem to be the main beneficiary of the collapse of the TPP. As usual, we did the groundwork, and China will take over with its rival Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/21/opinion/a-retreat-from-tpp-would-empower-china.html

China has made supplying the third world demand for manufactured goods their priority knowing that, otherwise, they would have to compete with the US and Europe and their infrastructure isn't developed well enough to do that. Still, Trump is attempting to declare war on Mexico, China, Texas, Arizona, and California with the question being where is he taking all of this and what will be the impact. Its the civil war all over again with Trump attacking slavery (illegal immigrants) and the international conglomerates. No matter what he does next he has already opened Pandora's box and both the democratic and republican parties will have no choice but to address the very issues they have been avoiding for decades. How exactly all those dominoes might fall is anyone's guess, but the gloves are coming off because there is way too much money at stake.
