When I was a young lad, we had Music Appreciation class in school, which gave us an overview of music.

But lately, when I speak with college students about music, I get responses like "Who's Lead Belly" "Who's Woody Guthrie"

So, what musicians from the past should everyone know. Not in detail, but at the "Oh, yeah, I've heard that name, what did they do?" level.

    I'll start with

    Lead Belly
    Woody Guthrie
    John Phillips Souza
    Bob Dylan
    Stephen Foster
    Glenn Miller
    Billie Holliday
    Mississippi John Hurt

A couple of non-musicians that should be on the list are John and Alan Lomax.

Didn't Alan Lomax record Robert Johnson? Or am I mistaken?
