Having lived in Colombia for nearly three years now, I am hearing a lot about Venezuela.

As the years have passed since I have been living in Colombia, I have been meeting more and more Venezuelans who are escaping that disaster. It slowly started around when Chavez took power.  In fact, I know some foreigners who left in the late 90s and early 2000s because they could see a country on the decline.  But the people I talk to from Venezuela have some pretty horrific things to say about the current situation.  It is a shame because it really looks like a beautiful country.  But people from Caracas, etc. who I have met say they just had to get out because there is barely any food on store shelves and even getting basic things (flour, cosmetics like soap, toilet paper) can take literally all day and require going to many locations.

I do hope things get better.  It used to be an amazing place but they have been in a slow decline for 15-20 years which has become more rapid as of late and reached a very bad low

Elect a socialist that essentially bases government revenue on one commodity (oil, in this case), institutes currency and price controls, and is unfriendly towards business.  Then sit back and watch your country fall all to hell.

This story gives what you never expected!

How very very sad, that such an oil rich country, once a beautiful tourist attraction, could have fallen so low!

I think Chavez has been hiking the cost of the heavily state subsidized oil.

Many places in this world have become humanitarian disasters proving the world has got to get its shit together better, but any awareness requires our faith in our own awareness making the human spirit indomitable because virtue is its own reward. Economics are about to change fundamentally with computers already taking over the job for us and every industry focusing on AI and self-assembling technology. The next generation scientific revolution will be more organic as well as mechanical and should make all of our institutions, political and otherwise, more humane.

as if a "crapitolist" who bases everything on exports and tourism,

and doesn't invest in nor develop an educated populas, who can build and maintain their own infrastructure,

instead of relying on forign investment, doesn't have the same result???

it isn't the ideology as such.  its a matter of how much is based on consideration,

and how much on ostentatious "gain" at the expense of others.

an economy can flourish or be screwed up under any ideology,

if ideology is even anything other then a choice of terminology and the making of excuses,

its about how ALL people, in AND out of governments and other positions of authority,

act toward and treat each other, AND the environment, upon which all life, ultimately depends.

and thank god i'm not quite human

Hmmm....I'm not sure if what you're referring to here is capitalist (or 'crapitolist, as you say) economy or not; not enough info.

Name a planned economy socialist paradise.  And why do people go to extraordinary lengths to reach such places as Germany or The United States, arguably capitalist countries?  No people have ever flocked to, say, North Korea, Cuba or Zimbabwe.  The USSR, when it existed, had the largest planned economy in the world; people to defected anyway.

I"m the first to admit that no economic system is going to be perfect; they involve imperfect people.  But socialism?  We can do much better than that.

Yes, how two people, Chavez and than especially Maduro, can turn what was once such a beautiful, rich country about 30 years ago, the leader in S, America literally and turned it into such a disaster, and a country that is so poor is really mind blowing.  And again, very sad.
