The Secondhand Lifestyle.

Some second hand, but when it comes to tools, the best is the best. I grew up in houses with money so as a kid, they bought me the best clothing shoes, shirts, etc.
I have a married couple as friends and they grew up soooo differently than I did. He was one of 13 kids and his dad chopped cotton and drank lots of booze. His wife grew up in Arizona and her family were fruit tramps. Picking in Texas, moving to California to follow the crops and on to Washington for apples ,while living in tents. They had a waaay different idea of money than I did. They would NEVER buy anything used.He became very, very successful making a quarter mil a year and she would NEVER,EVER go camping. My family had money ( not that I got any of it) so I have always been somewhat cavalier about it. So. I guess it may depend on circumstances whether one feels it's better to buy used, but it really makes sense to do so. (sorry for the long story)

 

I recognize how bizarre this is, but sometimes I feel like used things have a certain detectable energy (I used this for lack of a better term); this energy isn't necessarily good or bad, but the things themselves just have a certain 'weight' to them that new things do not carry. It has always made me uncomfortable, especially as a child (it's better now, because I can reason my way out of it). I recall visiting yard sales or antique stores as a kid, and I would feel so overwhelmed by the collective energy of all of the items, that I would start to panic and cry or, as I got older, wait outside when I could no longer bear being surrounded by all of the contents of the store. On occasion, I would detect a sharply sinister or profoundly "sad" vibe on some object, and it would really upset me.

 

When I was a child, our house was destroyed by fire and we lost everything. We were grateful for secondhand clothes, furniture, ...anything. In August, our daughter's house was flooded by Hurricane Harvey and they lost almost everything. Secondhand clothes, furniture, toys, and everything else were welcome. I believe good material things should be passed on to others until they simply wear out.

 

When I first moved out of home, I had all family hand me downa from my folks or aunts/uncles.

When I moved back overseas we used old family stuff that we'd left behind.

I still use them too, slowly we are starting to get our own furniture etc. I think I just need to get new bedroom drawers and then it might actually all be ours then.

My new bookshelves are from Ikea lol they're a 3 piece. Ikea is a bit too modern for my personal tastes. I like old wooden box style furniture. Dark stained. Ikea is all white and red and what not.

 

I don't know what new stuff is...
