The House of Lords is mainly an impotent talking club.

'Senate' kind of implies an elected body.

If you were to watch the TV coverage of the House of Lords, you might notice that quite a few of their lordships are deep in slumber during the debates.
Truth is, they have very little power to change what the Commons decide. The role is mainly an advisory one. They can propose amendments to bills, but if the Commons don't like what they propose it is simply ignored. Now and then, a House of Lords amendment does make it into law, but not very often.

Really it's a relic of the feudal system which has gradually had it's power striped away over a long period. An elected 'senate' would probably be a much better way of doing things.

Boris Johnson as new foreign secretary. Sure that'll do a lot to help.

I think we may be in for an even bigger mess than that created by Cameron.

David Davis - new minister for Brexit. A long time Euro-sceptic. It's interesting though that at present he's actually challenging May in the European courts over the so called 'snooper's charter' - the Data Retention and Investigatory Powers act.

I wonder how seriously the rest of the world is going to take Johnson though. Some initial reactions seem to regard his appointment as a bit of a joke.

So most British people do not know how the government works and the role of the civil service? Has anyone not seen the TV series Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister? Actually there is something to be said for having a bureaucratic government like they have in France or Japan. These countries are very civilized places to live in.Both countries have easily the best inter-city train services. Israel is on the opposite end on the spectrum and they have political chaos.
