they say its even worse if you cross your legs because the heart has to pump harder.

Uncrossing them (in a short dress) provides good cardio for the guys in the office... in theory. You know I would never do such a thing. ;)

I've moved my home office upstairs, so I go up and down the stairs a lot on days when I work from home. Also, my office (both locations) is set up so that I can't just roll my chair to all the file cabinets. I'm trying to get in the habit of standing up and walking around a little during nearly every phone call. Every little thing like that helps.

I wonder how driving a car compares, statistically. It's not as passive as office work.

A nurse at my ob-gyn office told me you should walk 5 minutes for every 30 minutes you sit. My boss would kill me if i just left my desk every 30 minutes, but i do try to get up and stretch every so often.

i used to do it when i lived with my parents. we had some trees with low hanging branches, so i would just set the mower to a low speed and walk behind it when going under those trees. of course, that doesn't work so well if you have a pedal driven mower instead of a lever. and nowadays you have to disable that stupid switch that shuts off the engine as soon as you take your weight off the seat.

I try and get up several times per hour at work. My job, thankfully, is a good mix of walking and sitting. I have a hard time focusing if I have to sit for more than 30 minutes, uninterrupted. I make a point to move around a lot both at work and home, and get my heart rate elevated several times per day.

I think the moral of the article is to keep those bodies moving.....walk, swim, ride, run
    just move

I like the graphic that says "sitting increases your risk of death up to 40%".....I figure we all have a 100% chance of death.
