Hell yes! I used to read these when I was about 15 / 16. They were a bit before my time, but my step dad owned them all. Long time since I've come across them though, nice to be reminded
Gilbert Sheldon (artist and creator of Freak bro's) is a fucking genius. Sometimes just a tiny background detail would leave you ROFL... Remember "Wonder-Warthog" Hog of steel?
I'm pretty sure both they and Mr N lived just down the block when I lived in the Haight and Dr. Atomic was in our commune. I was the real life basis of Doc's Dealrt McDope. LOL Dope will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through timed of no dope!
What can I say? Larry Todd in who's Dr. Atomic comic Dealer McDope first appeared was hanging out ar our place working on the design for his Proto Pipe that year. Later when we were busted for pot (100Ks) the newspapers declared us to be the biggest wholesale dealers in San Francisco. (Little did rhey know! lol)
Of course! I loved the Furry Freak Brothers comics. I recently bought a compendium just for fun, and it turns out that my 12 year old son really likes them too! Wife was pissed though - why you let him see that stuff...its a bad influence! No its not. He'll be fine. Watching the news is a bad influence - that shit is really happening. These guys are just cartoon stoners.
The movie about Crumb and his brother was hilarious. (don't forget Zippy ,the Pinhead--"Am I president yet"?)
Oh man--I just laughed my ass off at seeing Zippy again!!!!!!!! I have a #1 Zippy--gonna' have to get it out!!
There was Bizarre sex comix... Bizzare sex had lotta early Crumb Also out of that mag came Richard Corben, premier artist for the next wave of illustrated adult comics, Heavy metal Cover Illustration by Richard Corben
you mean that dope can get you thru times of no money better than money can get you through times of no dope? and the sixty five year old hippie who's had thousands of trips and every one a bummer but he's not giving up yet? yeah. I remember them. I 've moved on, but.
I heard last year that someone is planning to make a film of the Furry Freak Bros. That is just not going to work is it?
I definately remember all those! You know--I miss the Berkely Barb and the LA Free Press. Same era--spoke truth to power.
Some of the best comix ever printed. Still have my originals; every once and a while when i need a good laugh I unbox them and read them.
