Start with Bill Monroe, there are many collections of his music. And the DVD High Lonesome Sound is essential.
For traditional bluegrass besides Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, and early Flatt and Scruggs.Recommend Flatt and Scruggs at Carnegie Hall. Also try to get ahold of the Bluegrass collection from the Newport Folk Festival, early 1960s.
And for a more progressive sound that is still pure bluegrass, cannot do better than early Country Gentlemen, when the band was Charlie Waller, guitar;John Duffey, mandolin;Eddie Adcock ,banjo, and either Tom Gray or Ed Ferris, bass. Gray and Duffey were founding members of the Seldom Scene, also recommended.
And have to recommend Old And In The Way, the bluegrass ensemble with Jerry Garcia playing a great 5-string banjo.

Not really, we old folks just think so. She's been a big deal for a few years. I mean, she's old enough to vote now!

As far as the more traditional bands go, the Grascals might be among the best going right now. If you're looking for older stuff, I happen to love the Country Gentlemen (previously mentioned on here), the Seldom Scene (that's how it's spelled) and the Bluegrass Cardinals (since my father DID tour with them, but that's another story). JD Crowe isn't as well known outside of bluegrass as Earl Scruggs, but he's just as phenomenal with a banjo.

The Grascals (an older recording, a little bit of personnel change since then, but they still sound great)

If you can get those, you're off to a good start!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gX1EP6mG-E"]Old Crow Medicine Show - Wagon Wheel [Official Music Video] - YouTube

Heard this song years and years ago and now just heard Darius Rucker from Hootie and the Blowfish remade it and it sucks.

Oh dear God, I just noticed someone else already suggested Old Crow, ah well, I tried. They are pretty awesome tho

^^- "Not technically ... but close" is always a good recommendation for music. Recommended music should expand horizons, not reenforce existing isolationism.
