but Electric Ladyland and Cosmogramma by Flying Lotus were both really awesome when on LSD

Not sure if anyone can help but ive been trying to think of the name of this psychedelic band from the 60s for quite sometime. It may be obscure but I heard it on iTunes 60s radio and I believe the word purple was in the title of the band... whatever, I love psychedelic rock.. LUCY IN THE SKYYYY OF DIAAAMONDSSS

 

Amazing. No one picked Cream one of the founding members of the psychedelic era.

 

The first thing I thought when I read OP was "these are obscure" and then I began thinking about the obscure gems I own and thought how they really weren't as good as most of the more famous gems...

...and then I remembered how shallow the pool is we get to choose from. It is fucking HARD to get your music heard. We only hear a fraction of the stuff that was ever made because someone invested enough money or someone marketed it right or somehow the band created a cult legend that grew over time.

Anyway, too hard to pick 5.

Off the top of my head, here's some:

1. Acid Mothers Temple - Absolutely Freak Out (Zap Your Mind)
2. Acid Mothers Temple - Family Compilation triple CD
3. Acid Mothers Temple - Born To Be Wild In The USA 2000 self-made bootleg... the low quality live recording of this makes it an absolutely essential AMT release. So powerful, so awesome.
4. Butthole Surfers - Double Live self-made bootleg... you can get this for free on their website now.
5. Flaming Lips - Zaireeka, if you happen to have 4 CD players and 4 arms to press play all at the same time.

Speaking of Beatles, I highly recommend one particular collection of Beatlesesque material: Tepid Peppermint Wonderland by Brian Jonestown Massacre. They've put out a LOT of records, but this is the place to start. Or else "Thank God For Mental Illness," but that is not very Beatlesy.
