my landlady just went there, she loved it

she had been a missionary [mennonite, non-proselytizing] in uganda and mozambique years back, but would not go to south africa with the apartheid government in place

she said it was very safe, though she mostly went to black neighborhoods and nature reserves

    she's in her 60s so i didn't hear anything about psy-trance

most anywhere you go, if you show respect you will be treated with kindness

If you're from a Western country travelling then you are wealthier than almost everyone - so you are a target. Depends on the country but there were sure some drunken border guards toting machine guns in some places.

I live and work in South Africa and have traveled to many places around the world and can definitely recommend a holiday in SA.

Like a lot of people have posted, Africa is very big, so it's better to look at specific places that are of interest to you.

South Africa is reasonably safe. The crime statistics are horrible, but as long as you're not stupid, it's fairly easy to stay out of trouble. Bear in mind that you inevitably will have more money than the vast majority of people in this country, therefore if you hang around dodgy neighbourhoods flashing a lot of cash, you might be better off not coming.

On the upside, you can have a really great holiday in South Africa on a fairly minimal budget. Decent accommodation is no longer much cheaper than in most western countries, but it's certainly at the lower end of the scale. Restaurants and alcohol are quite cheap and quality is good. And above all, it's a gorgeous country.

The Cape Town area and its surroundings are very beautiful and offer loads of activities to do so one can plan any type of trip either short or long there. Other must see place is the Kruger National Park that is one of the top attractions in Africa. But whenever you are in Africa always be observatory and beware of the happening going on in the surroundings so as to keep yourself safe there.

South Africa is a beautiful country, with ample natural beauty and semi Rain forests especially in the Mpumalanga region,Eastern Cape and Northwest, the crime is rampant, and there is the rather often mugging and raping of tourists,IF THEY GO UNESCORTED to secluded areas.
The people are generally friendly and warm hearted and hospitable, but in some of the provinces the roads are terrible, with many pot holes. One myth I have to dismiss is the idea that there are wild beasts running around in the cities and streets.
The population is overwhelmingly black, colored and indian and white,in order of merit.
Young kids and teens love walking barefoot, and to see barefoot people in malls arn't strange.
We have huge citiesNtrain and bus services, but mini bus taxis are ample. Our winters arn'very snowey, but can get cold, and our summers can become very hot,in excess of 42 degrees Celsius.

Yeah, get to see South Africa. If at all possible, take a month and just go and explore the country. There are so many different landscapes in the country it's ridiculous, and they're all jaw droppingly gorgeous!
If you get a chance and you like isolation, get up into Namibia as well. That's still the best place I've ever been in my life. My dad and I did a 7 day kayak trip down the Orange River and it was the most magnificent un-intoxicated experience I've ever had. Unfortunately the guys only do a 4 day trip now, but I'm hoping to go with a group of mates next year.

As far as safety is concerned it's all been mentioned; don't be a typical tourist with cameras dangling round your neck, waving your cash around, talking loudly on your new spiffy phone and you should be alright :p

Oh, and don't visit any townships......

I live in South africa and have done so since 1972,it is a beautiful country . I live about in Marloth Park which is next to the Crocodile river which is the southern most border of the Kruger Park . If i drive down the road i have to watch out for antelope, buck wildebeest , giraffe , etc But thats because i live in a nature conservancy , the rest of the country is just like living anywhere.

Crime is crime just like the rest of the planet, so just be aware and dont look like a tourist ;)

It is one of the most diverse ego systems on earth , and the scenery is breathtaking .

What else can i tell you , oh yeah its hot- today is 100 F / 38 C and its only the beginning of summer :D
