Perhaps so, but I never have been a liberal.

And just where would that be?

I think it would be adequate to just apply the Constitution as it currently exists.

It can become so if you allow it.
Some are, but many are not.
I don't put too much into studies or statistics, and obviously most on the left don't accept the results of polls.
Sometimes myths can be based upon facts, not that I would say such is the 'norm'.

Like it's doing right now? I live in Asia now, and recently was visited by a Liberal friend from Wisconsin, who is vacationing on his extended unemployment benefits, and is expecting them to be further extended.

I never said government had no role at all, and I have no problem when a large majority of citizens agree to allow government to take on additional responsibilities. I do have a problem when the Federal government feels it has the authority to mandate against the will of the people by use of a simple majority, 50%+1 and even then has to do so coercively. Not to mention the use of "executive orders" which bypass both the citizens and the elected representatives completely. That goes beyond Democracy.

How? Well I no longer reside in the U.S. but as a citizen still have to pay taxes based on my worldwide income, with some negligible loop holes. I served in the military, it does nothing to protect me, I don't use the Public highways, National parks, or Justice system. My children are in non-U.S. schools which I pay out of pocket for. The only service I received from the U.S. government is my passport renewal every 10 years, and that I also pay for out of pocket, not through taxes. You and other citizens benefit from my taxes, which benefits me not at all.

I live part time in a Socialist Democratic Republic, governed by a 1 party Communist form of government, and even it appears less Socialist, and more free, than what the U.S. is becoming.

I more or less find it amusing to keep an eye on U.S. politics, as one sometimes has to adapt to the effects caused by governments other than the one they live under. The dollar has already lost over 25% in relation to the local currency which I assume I should applaud Obama for. I guess you could say that is a form of renumeration for my tax dollars. Taxes must be paid in U.S. currency so a weak dollar is good for me.

Number6 responded to most of this quite adequately. I would add that you sound like one of those government conspiracy nutjobs and I am happy, however, that you don't live here any longer. I also assume that you will not collect Social Security or sign up for Medicare since you feel so strongly about "government handouts."

I also see you as one of the wealthy who made a fortune exploiting the sweat of the poor; the same people you would watch starve to death or die from lack of medical care because they should get a job that doesn't exist. I also see you as one of the people who sent their jobs abroad in order to make more wealth for yourself.

I don't believe that your friend made a trip overseas on his "unemployment check" for one second. Unemployment doesn't pay that much. Again you are spreading lies and propaganda.

As for today's economic problems, you only have one party to blame for that one, the Republicans.

Since you don't like the compassionate politics of America, stay where you are, we'll all be happier.

If you no longer live in the USA, then you are hardly representive of people who actually live here. You are an exception to the rule and you know it, so to use yourself as an example as to why no one should ever have to pay taxes is not only disingenuous, it is plainly stupid.

I'm not jumping into this argument-anyone that has been here for a while knows how I feel about conservatives. But I had what I think might be a feasable idea for health care. Extend medicare down 5 years--for example,if the earliest you can get medicare now is 62,extend it down to 57,that is ,cover everyone down to 57 for 5 years and see how it works. If it goes smoothly and works ,extend it down another 5 years to 52 and so on. 5 years may be too long--maybe 3 would work better. Anyway, doing it slowly would give adjustment periods and eventually everyone would be covered. SS check allotment ages would remain the same-62 and 65. (is it 67 now?) This seems like a way to MAYBE get conservatives on board. Anyone think something could be made of this?

Medicare begins at 65 unless you qualify for disability. I like the idea. I submitted a similar one to the White House over a year ago. Tat was to raise the income levels gradually to include more people in Medicaid. I think I don't know what happened to the part that would include younger people in Medicare; it was there at one time.

Both of these are programs that are working quite well.

Conservatives are not going to get on board with anything that will show success for Obama or the Democratic Congress. They would rather the country goes down the tubes.

It WAS 62 and 65 ,but maybe the ages have moved up. I know that after 65 ,a person is not penalized for any money over and above their SS check. Younger than 65 the gov will subtract from the SS check or take the whole thing,I suppose,if you make more than your check. You know,I called SS a few months back to see about disability and the lady told me flat out---no disability after 65. Seems like there would be some exceptions, but not according to her.

Your retirement age depends on your present age. It's going up for the younger crowd.

At 62, early retirement, you're allowed to make up to ~14,000 without penalties. I just retired early at 62 and I have a filed for disability, also. If I get the disability, I will get the amount I would qualify for if I had waited until 65. In that respect, no disability after 65 because you qualify for the maximum already.

Maybe, not sure, if you had retired at 62, then became disabled, you could get the maximum for the disability. Like a getting a raise.

But my views do appear to have more in common with a majority of Americans.
Although we may disagree philosophically, what is factually disingenuous is to falsely attribute something to have been said by your opponent "so to use yourself as an example as to why no one should ever have to pay taxes is not only disingenuous, it is plainly stupid." I agree only that government is a necessity of society, and that taxes are also a necessity for government to accomplish the tasks for which it is made responsible. Where I/we seem to disagree most is WHERE the source of governments power resides.

What's actually kind of funny is all of your responses are somewhat bashing where America is heading overall, and it seems your point of view is coming from the conservative POV that we are heading into socialism, taxes are getting out of control, etc. And yet you let out this tid-bit of info. You claim yourself as a liberal, but are quite good at playing devils-advocate if you are. Which I guess may be the right way to go about it...as it can be more philosophical. But yet nobody has hopped on this little paragraph you've said. So, do you agree if we spread wealth a little more in the States, we might be happier and more free? Or, where exactly DO you believe we should head as a nation, coming from someone who lives in what sounds to me to be China (Asia, communist hints)?

I've never claimed to be a Liberal, at least not in modern terms. In fact it's difficult to claim a single all encompassing philosophical point of view as it depends on the environment in which it applies, my home, my village, the town in which my village exists, the city in which my town exists, the Province in which the city exists, and finally the Nation to which the province belongs. I tend to start off more Liberal, and going up the chain toward the National level become more and more Conservative. In my home I'm fully aware of the needs and the foremost authority on how to care for them, and take full responsibility for such. In my village I and most everyone within are quite aware of the needs of each other and rarely need or ask for outside assistance. Highways and Electricity are provided and maintained from the National level, but little else. In many ways we are more free than those who live in the "free world", but not because of Socialism. It is more because there's nothing much to take from where I live as most people are self sufficient, earn little or no money, and can trade in lieu of cash for goods and services needed. That's a luxury that few Americans can exercise, as money is a necessity in the developed world, and government tends to be most active where the money is to be found.
If you spread the wealth around? How might you do so in a way that would be acceptable to all? Obviously those on the receiving end would be happier, but does that equate to making them, or those who are providing the wealth any more free? Actually spreading the wealth is a misnomer, you may be able to spread the money around, but wealth is amassed in many ways other than accumulating money. Only a fool hoards currency, except in the case it has value greater than it's face value such as rare coins, while the smart person uses money only as a tool to amass wealth. People can have little or no cash, yet be immensely wealthy.
Yes, I feel the U.S. is on the path to becoming a Socialist state, it happens like encountering a childhood friend who you've not seen for over 50 years compared to closely watching your children age during the same period. You continually adapt to the latter, so the change is not abrupt.
I left the States well over a decade ago, and found areas in Asia where I can live freely, but they will likely become fewer and fewer as time goes on.

I gotta say, you did the right thing by moving out of the country, it would be a good idea if you gave up your citizenship as well, that way you will not have to pay taxes here either. Me, I like it here, I think I will stick around.

So, how do we get the Tea Baggers to leave? Think of the excellence we could achieve without that Ball and Chain around our ankles.

Why the big secret about where you are? Are you one of those companies who shipped American jobs abroad, or a buyer who floods American markets with cheap goods that put Americans out of work?

Same thing happed to alphabet city on the lower east side of Manhattan- Im almost 60- I gotta tell ya- I miss ol grimy NY of those ol days- but you aint gonna stop progress and I guess you gotta accept it-
You dont have to buy thier overpriced spring water or go to thier fancy susi spots but the days of old aint comin back

Its being going on since they built the railroad in this country, killed the native americans and ruined land, and slaughtered all the bison and other animals doing it,along with the treatment of the laborers who worked for practically nothing to get it done was despicable
    Worth it?? Maybe-Maybe not

But if there is $$ to be made it will always win out at the end of the day-in the name of "moving forward"

    Times change-people change-
Keep your mind in a peaceful place

You're correct in that I did the right thing by moving out of the country.
There are both positive and negative aspects on giving up citizenship, and should the positive aspects begin to outweigh the negative aspects, I would immediately do so.
You obviously have not studied tax law.
If you're happy where you are, you should remain there.

I've said I am in Asia, and to disclose my exact location would be irrational as I don't wish to open the flood gates. I'm not a company, I've been retired for many years now, but I do appreciate the companies that ship jobs abroad. After all, don't you wish to share the wealth? Not to mention the fact that the prices of the products they create are much cheaper than those same products when created in the U.S.

Societies will always remain disparate under any form of government. Equality will never be accomplished by any means universally acceptable to all humans, but can only be achieved be regression to a distinct 2 class society made up of the ruling and the ruled classes. Equality, if it is to be achieved and maintained, requires giving up individual freedom and placing the decision making powers in the hands of a few who are empowered above the masses. Initially it may come about through a Democratic process, but power once achieved tends to grow.
Disagree if you wish, but as it appears most everyone here is greatly younger than me, I would only suggest that you watch and learn.

So, you're a citizen for convenience, not patriotism?

I haven't studied tax law because I have no problem with paying my fair share. Evidently your own greed is more important than your country.
