Number Theory

    What is the classical work on number theory for the mathmatically illiterate (for now)? I tried Dedekind but it is too dense for my current level of understanding on the subject. What else would you prescribe? Gauss?
    I don't want some textbook. I'm looking for something canonical, if you will. Thanks.
