just remember that a lot of time he is actually making jokes and laughing but in a sombre way, he is actually incredibly funny in a lot of songs but to understand some you definitely need to be british or know the cultutre well example of his wit - "and if a ten ton truck should kill the two of us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die" LOL A song called "That Joke isnt funny anymore" sums up the smiths, and is one of their finest, but i think this is their finest this is called "I know its over" Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head And as I climb into an empty bed Oh well. Enough said. I know it's over - still I cling I don't know where else I can go Oh ... Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head See, the sea wants to take me The knife wants to slit me Do you think you can help me ? Sad veiled bride, please be happy Handsome groom, give her room Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly (Though she needs you More than she loves you) And I know it's over - still I cling I don't know where else I can go Over and over and over and over Over and over, la ... I know it's over And it never really began But in my heart it was so real And you even spoke to me, and said : "If you're so funny Then why are you on your own tonight ? And if you're so clever Then why are you on your own tonight ? If you're so very entertaining Then why are you on your own tonight ? If you're so very good-looking Why do you sleep alone tonight ? I know ... 'Cause tonight is just like any other night That's why you're on your own tonight With your triumphs and your charms While they're in each other's arms..." It's so easy to laugh It's so easy to hate It takes strength to be gentle and kind Over, over, over, over It's so easy to laugh It's so easy to hate It takes guts to be gentle and kind Over, over Love is Natural and Real But not for you, my love Not tonight, my love Love is Natural and Real But not for such as you and I, my love Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
actually i recently read an article on the web and saw a video where someone recreated the foot pedals and effects he used on his guitar and then spent some time working out how he did make the guitar sound like that. it was extraordinary tbh and yeah that song is great
not even johnny marr can't recreate that sound - and that is self admitted. but yeah, the smiths are my favourite group more or less. couldn't choose a favourite so here's a few: - how soon is now - this charming man - the boy with the thorn in his side - there is a light that never goes out - girlfriend in a coma - i know it's over - panic those are some great, big hits. but the smaller songs are often the better ones: - last night i dreamt that somebody loved me - stretch out and wait - sweet and tender hooligan - rush and a push and the land we stand on is ours - suffer little children - nowhere fast - headmasters ritual - frankly mr shankly - cemetery gates - you just haven't earned it yet baby - half a person - well i wonder - pain a vulgar picture i could go on and on until i'd mentioned the whole discography, basically. not a bad list for a band with only four studio albums. - asleep -
There's a light that never goes out, Oscillate Wildly, Golden Lights (lol its just so fucking weird), Bigmouth Strikes Again (again, weird), This Charming Man, How Soon is Now (of course)
Rusholme Ruffians, Still Ill, At Amber, Accept Yourself, I Don't Owe You Anything, Etc Etc Etc. I like Morrissey's solo stuff better. Especially Kill Uncle and Your Arsenal. He did an interview with Joni Mitchell that I had on Cd...many years ago. You all should pick it up, if you haven't already. Also, his boot 'Higher Education' is one of his best. LOL.
