I found a good site. But then they have a physical Store near me in Las Vegas.
    http://www.guitarcenter.com/

It's where I buy all my stuff. Strings, Straps, picks, yadda-yadda.

Whats wrong with a guitar that the frets keep raising up so I have to file them down a bit?
Is it a warped guitar neck?

    www.workshop.net
you def. need a hi-speed connect for this. it's a free site w/ online lessons for everyone no matter what skill level. Kinda like having a guitar teacher w/o the pressure.

I always say to get a teacher as fast as possible and lern the right way to play. You learn more in a month of lessons than you could in six months of bangin it out in the bedroom.

Id have to disagree stratplayer. You have to find your grip on guitar before you can learn anything. Even if your just playing nonsence you'll find your style, then you just need the basics, chords and scales... then your a guitar player.

If you want to get a teacher, get one.
    If you don't, don't.

But at least buy a book that teaches chords and scales.
Music theory is a whole'nother ball game that is best left for down the road.

Teachers can at least help you to stay focused if you are able to make a connection with them. I've been playing for over thirty years and have had some good teachers and some bad ones. But I can say that I got something useful out of every one of them.

    Everyone should play something.

Yeah a teacher is definitely not required. The big thing is how motivated are you. If you're a person that can stick to it and play it everyday and stumble through songs and music, learning by ear, learning to read music, learning to read tabs then do that. Some people like the teacher not just for the knowledge but because it puts a sort of "Deadline" on them. Additional motivation.

I did it, and now I play in a band and we get paid. In some ways you'll miss out on parts of the "music" without music theory knowledge which you MIGHT gain from a teacher, but your musical intelligence and instincts will grow leaps and bounds.

    That's what it's about anyway.

Also, I think jamming with other people, especially people just close but above your skill level is the best way to improve.

To comment on this, even though it was forever ago.

Some of the best personal learning experiences I've had were finding a tab, or chords structure for a song. Finding out it was incorrect, and then listening to the song and correcting the tab for myself. The key is realizing when the tab is wrong, gotta train the ol' ear.

yeah, you don't NEED to know theory. You don't NEED to have a privete teacher...but shit, it certainly helps.
