Im sure you all know after the line, "Did it matter, does it now? Stephen would answer if he only knew how", someone screams.. Who is it...I never found out. I kinda think its Bob Does anyone know for sure? On another note, it gives me goosebumps when I hear it...it's such a wonderful song and that break is just too cool.
weird i was just listening to scents and subtle sounds by phish haha.... thats really off topic but i have no clue who yells sorry haha
scents and subtle sounds is my favorite song right now....it changes from time to time, but that one is really what i'm all about right now.....
Sounds like Bobby. Was Pigpen on Aoxomoxoa? I don't recall off the top of my head. Could it have been him.
Bob? really? I heard from a source that it was Jerry. I'm not really sure on how reliable that source is though.
yea, pig was around then: but the girly-ness is more Bobby than Pig's ecstacy. I think I'll give it a new listen...
Is it true that at one of the Grateful Dead's first shows (or maybe they were still the Warlocks) was at a bar and that they wouldnt let Bob in because he was too young.
It was Weir,no doubt about it.I saw them play it in 1969-70.Jerry never screamed.Pig's scream was usually a short James Brown-like "Ow!",although you can hear a long one at the very end of Lovelight on Live/Dead. Weir's scream was in the tradition of Little Richard (Lucille),McCartney (I Saw Her Standing There),and a lot of mid-60's garage bands, usually done as a lead-in to an instrumental solo.
I'm pretty late in responding to this thread, but if anyone is still interested, you can watch a performance of St Stephen from Playboy after Dark in 1969 here: https://www.youtube.com/w/Grateful-Dead-live-on-Playboy-After-Dark%2C-1969?v=20WC2GcTQoI&search=grateful Bobby screams just like on the studio version. Sweet, seet Mountains of the Moon too. Enjoy.
for sure Bobby......its his voice, and the video linked above prooves it.....but thos two performances were pretty good.....i loved that mountains on the moon....and i wish they didn't cut the St. Stephen jam!!!!
ahhh one of my favorites! idk who it is (guessing bobby) but I have heard it in so many versions, live dead and aoxomoxoa...and lots of boots...the greatest is from the Barton hall boot I have!
