What is the general concensus among hippies concerning this queen of jazz? Just curious. I love her music, her voice, and the fact that she anonymously donated great amounts of money to various charities (this was only found out after she died).

I absolutely love her to death. I'm in a jazz combo right now, and we managed to find someone who sounds just like her, and it was the greatest thing ever. She truly is a queen :).

Yeah - if you want that late night blue light smokey sleazy bar feel - her version of 'these foolish things' hits the spot. Her voice is exactly like velvet.Last summer when I lived in the hotel I'd play her whole album at full blast with a cool beer the window open while the sun was on its way out and loads of chicks hangin around out in the street.Beautiful

There's a reason she was called "The first lady of song".

Wonderful singer who could do pop as well as jazz. Covered a few Beatles songs as well.

Little Esther was good too. Fitzgerald was one of a kind, though.

    Nina Simone is my favourite

Like her better than Fitzgerald or Etta James, although the line gets a bit fuzzy when it comes to what is jazz

The subject matter of most of Etta James songs is annoying, mostly whining about not getting some guy

Yeah! "Sinnerman" used to be one of my favorite running songs.

Yes + became Esther Phillips- wonderful singer though like many her life was marred by drugs, etc. Perhaps the drugs sadness is summed up in her version of Gil Scott-heron's Home is where the hatred is. Had a big pop hit with a classily discofied What a difference a day makes, originally by another legend- Dinah Washington.
