The reason why fundamentalist Christians think it's all about evolution, and that they must prove it to us all, is because of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial. (And really the ancient Greeks already knew about evolution.) Actually, the Bible would also make you against the Heliocentric theory, the germ theory and you'd have to believe the earth is 6,000 years old. Plus, all disease is caused by a demon, or is punishment for sin. And you still haven't explained dinosaur bones. (For the record, around the Scopes Monkey Trial, some people were still claiming they were buried there by the Devil himself.) Some people still say the earth might be flat, because of things like the fact the moon landing might have been a hoax. Not really. Very few people have been in space, it's true though. But the Bible also says a semi-spherical dome called the firmament holds back the celestial waters. Now anyone who has ever taking a ride in a helicopter can tell you that just isn't true. So if you fundamentalist Christians want to prove to us the Bible is perfect and literal when it comes to science, you have your work cut out for you. Good luck.
I am still trying to figure out how the State of Tennessee vs John T Scopes is the reason why fundamentalist Christians think it's all about evolution.
I should have been more clear. I do not see a correlation between the two and was wondering how you came to your conclusion.
The evolution debate is not central to what is scientifically inaccurate about the Bible. The Bible is full of ridiculous scientific blunders. And historical and moral ones too. And Creationists (and now creation science) claim that is what it is all about. The Theory of Evolution. I thought it kind of centered around the Scopes trial. I know some people say it had something to do with the fact that Charles Darwin was against organized religion, and some people today think an atheist. My point was, that it began over a debate over one issue alone, that Creationist and people like that know very little about anyways. And that that debate is mostly a political one.
I totally agree!! The Scopes trial did bring the creation/evolution issue to the nation's attention. The trial was set up as a publicity stunt to draw attention to Dayton, but turned into a huge event after others (Darrow, Bryan, Mencken, Moore, and a few others) became involved. The defense made the fundamentalists look like close minded idiots, and with the aide of H.L. Mencken from the Baltimore Sun (who coined the term Monkey Trial in his paper) it was picked up by newspapers everywhere and the WGN Chicago broadcast opened it to thousands in the Midwest. When WJ Bryan died a few days after the trial, the fundamentalists lost their leader and by 1927 were now a fairly silent minority. The Scopes Museum in Dayton has preserved a lot of what went on that week in photos and newspaper articles. The creationists came across as close-minded, illiterate, absurd clowns when they were defending their position.
It's the secret of Republican success. First, convince otherwise sane and rational folk that the world is only 6,000 years old and there are no dinosaurs because they couldn't fit on the Ark, based upon a book prefaced by a story (they'll swear is literally true) about a talking snake with a magic apple in an enchanted garden. You then conflate your Reich-Wing demagoguery cleverly disguised as Holy Writ with their concrete-operational literalism, infantile wishful thinking, and bibliolatry by appealing to their innate racism, misogyny, and xenophobia. Now they'll believe any cockamamie thing you tell them to; no matter how ludicrous, as long as it supports their delusion of being God's Chosen; i.e., Herrenvolk. Not only that; they'll believe it with the religious fervor of a Crusader for whom critical thinking, much less the questioning of doctrine, is considered heresy and all opposition must literally be demonic and treated accordingly. There you have the MAGA Cult.
ROTFLMAO I just love reading comments by people who think they are smart but never do any research on what they are talking about. The Democrats are no different than the Republicans. They are all liars and thieves who tell their brainless followers what they want to hear. The Democrats have completely changed in the last 50 years. Kennedy is spinning in his grave. It's no longer "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country ". Now its just the opposite. Now it's what do you want, okay we'll give it to you. The country is going to crap and all the politicians care about is getting themselves reelected so they can continue milking the system for themselves. As far as Fundamentalists Christians, the only problem with them is they try to put limits on what God can do. If He is all powerful, and I believe He is, then He can do anything He wants. I am a firm believer in God and the Bible. You have to study it to understand it. And to understand the background of when it was written. To quote Jay from Men in Black, "Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow." 2,000 years ago most people couldn't not imagine things today that we take for granted. Imagine riding through the streets of ancient Rome on a battery powered scooter. You would have been burned at the stake as a witch. Check out who came up with the idea of the Big Bang. and no not the tv show. Hint, he belonged to a mainstream Christian group. In the Bible, Peter tries to help out but stating that a thousand years is as a day to God. We couldn't even get a good working calendar until 1582. The Bible also states that God is not the author of confusion, so why have dinosaur bones if there was no evolution. I am a Christian and I believe in evolution and have found nothing in the Bible that contradicts my interpretation. Now lighten up. Three men in France were convicted of such terrible crimes that they were sentenced to death by the guillotine laying face up. They place the first man, a politician, in position and release the blade. It comes halfway down and stops. They remove him and test it and it works fine. They declare "It's a sign from God", you are pardoned and free. They put the second man, a financial adviser, in place and the same thing happened. They declare "It's a sign from God", you are pardoned and free. They put the third man, an engineer, in place and he looks up and says "Hold on. I see a problem."
This is fascinating from the European perspective - the Catholic Church has long accepted evolution, scientific geological earth history and heliocentrism. Flat earth was never really a thing, even if for some reason popularly assumed to be in the dark ages or what not. The official stance is in essence that 1 - none of it is relevant to salvation, so being a flat young earther does or a scientific evolutionist does not in itself make you more or less a good Christian. 2 - Christian faith is not incompatible with modern science in those realms It is debatable of course who is more internally consistent, even if stupid.
